Mac Optimize Storage: What Each Recommendation Changes
The Mac's storage recommendations make different trade-offs. Keeping a file only in the cloud, removing a watched download and permanently deleting an old Trash item are not interchangeable. Start with the category using space, then change one thing and check the result before enabling another option.
Open Storage and Read the Categories
Apple's Storage settings guide places this panel in System Settings > General > Storage. Record the available space and the largest categories. Open a category's information button to inspect its contents; the categories offered depend on what is on the Mac.
| Recommendation | What changes | Check before enabling |
|---|---|---|
| Store in iCloud | Stores files in iCloud and retains fewer full local copies | Cloud space and offline access |
| Optimize Storage | Removes already watched movies and TV shows | Downloads needed without internet |
| Empty Trash Automatically | Removes items after more than 30 days in Trash | Anything still needed for recovery |
| Review files | Lets you inspect and choose files to remove | Contents, location and a separate backup |
These recommendations are not one global cache-clearing switch. Choose the row that addresses your actual space use, rather than enabling everything at once.
Store in iCloud Changes Local Availability
Apple describes Store in iCloud as storing files in iCloud while keeping only recent files in full on the Mac. A cloud-only file is not a complete local copy. Confirm that essential files can be downloaded and opened before depending on them away from a connection.
Apple's iCloud Drive guide explains that edits and deletions propagate across devices. Synchronization is not an independent backup. Keep a separate copy of irreplaceable work before reorganizing it, and use the iCloud local storage guide for download-management details. Do not delete the cloud original merely to reduce local storage.
Optimize Storage Targets Watched Video
In this panel, Optimize Storage removes movies and TV shows already watched, rather than optimizing every application's data. Before using it, identify the Apple TV downloads you need offline. Losing a local download means relying on access to the source for another download; do not treat future availability as guaranteed.
Test one title before a trip. If you need it again, check that it is still available through your account and download it while connected. Turning a preference off does not itself restore a removed download. Keep this choice separate from iCloud file optimization.
Review Files Before Automating Trash
Apple's guide describes Documents views for large files, downloads and browsing folders. Sort by size, inspect a candidate and use Show in Finder to confirm its location before deleting it. A large project or archive can be valuable; size is not evidence that it is disposable.
Empty Trash Automatically removes items that have been there for more than 30 days. Leave it off while the Trash contains anything you still need to evaluate. A Trash item is recoverable only while it remains there; stopping future automatic removal does not bring permanently removed items back. Keep backups outside the Trash.
Check the Result Before Another Change
Return to the same Storage panel and compare available space and the category you targeted. Verify the document opens or the required video remains available offline. If little changed, inspect which category is large instead of deleting more unrelated files. System Data explained covers that separate accounting category.
For a reversal, restore a retained Trash item, download a still-available video again, or obtain the cloud file while connected, depending on what changed. None of these is a substitute for a separate backup. Stop when the next action would remove content you cannot identify or replace.
Where Mole Fits
Mole Mac's Analyze view adds a folder-based treemap for inspecting where disk usage sits. Clean offers eligible cache and log candidates for review, a different scope from Apple's cloud and watched-video recommendations. Review the selected paths and keep needed downloads; a cache can rebuild only if its sources remain available. Use Apple's controls for the recommendations above.
FAQ
Does Optimize Storage Clean Every App?
No. The recommendation discussed here targets watched movies and TV shows. Identify the large category before choosing another cleanup method.
Will Switching an Option Off Restore Files?
Do not assume it will. A removed download needs an available source, and permanently removed Trash items need another recovery copy.
Should I Enable Every Recommendation?
Choose according to offline access, backup and recovery needs. Make one change and verify both available space and the files you still need.
