Mole scans app and system caches, logs, developer tools, AI coding tools, browsers, cloud clients, design apps, communication apps, temporary files, and Trash. The result is a file list with sizes, not a single mystery total. Regenerable caches come first; package caches and build output with a real recovery cost stay unchecked until you choose them.

Cache removal is permanent by default so the reported freed space matches the result. A setting can route cache cleanup through the macOS Trash when you want a recoverable first pass. Caches owned by running apps are skipped.

Map disk usage before deleting

Analyze scans the selected disk or folder and draws a treemap where block area follows byte size. Drill into a folder, move back through the path bar, reveal an item in Finder, or move it to Trash after confirmation. Protected navigation roots stay view-only, and folders that macOS will not let Mole size remain visible with a retry state instead of disappearing from the result.

Watch load, memory, temperature, and fans

Status keeps CPU, GPU, memory, battery or thermal state, disk, network, and supported fan data in one dashboard, with 60-second sparklines and a sortable process list. The optional menu bar view can show two live metrics or a compact runner. Fan controls appear only on supported Macs.

The safety boundary is part of the product

Every destructive action is checked again against protected paths at the moment it runs. Mole refuses system roots and anything outside the allowed operation, records each removal in a local operations log, and never uploads scanned file names or contents. Full Disk Access expands what can be measured under Library; it does not turn off the path checks.

A repeatable way to review a Mac cleaner

Use the same Mac, the same user account, and the same sample folders for every tool. Record four things separately:

  1. Measured size: whether APFS clones and hard links are counted as logical bytes or recoverable physical space.
  2. Default selection: which caches are selected automatically and which costly-to-rebuild items require a decision.
  3. Recovery: whether each category is permanent, moved to Trash, or restored another way.
  4. Idle cost: CPU, memory, wakeups, and background sampling after the scan is finished.

For Mole, repeat the cleanup once in Permanent mode and once in Trash mode, then compare the visible result with free space reported by macOS. The safety documentation lists the boundaries that should remain unchanged in either run.
