GoogleUpdater and the Google LLC Background Item on Mac

    Apps & MaintenancePublished July 14, 2026Updated October 31, 20265 min read

GoogleUpdater on a Mac is part of Google's update system. Before removing it because a Google LLC background entry appeared, check which Google apps you still use and whether Chrome can update, because deleting an updater trades away its update service rather than merely clearing a cache.

Identify the Updater Before Removing Anything

Google's Chrome update explanation says GoogleUpdater checks for and installs updates, including security patches. Google Software Update and Keystone are older names you may encounter alongside the newer GoogleUpdater layout.

Do not assume Chrome is the only app to check. Include Google Drive and Google Earth Pro in your inventory. Their installer versions matter, so do not infer every app's updater from one folder name.

Item What it tells you What it does not prove
GoogleUpdater An updater component is present Which installed apps still need it
GoogleSoftwareUpdate or Keystone A legacy updater component or integration is present That it is an unused cache
Google LLC background entry A Google publisher name is shown That this entry belongs only to Chrome
Chrome update error The update check failed That deleting Google folders will fix it

Google's historical updater branding explicitly pairs GoogleUpdater with the company name Google LLC. Use the name as a clue, not as a diagnosis of a particular background entry.

    Distinguish Legacy and Current Locations

Chromium's migration instructions document both user and system locations. These are inspection targets, not a deletion list:

    ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate
    /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate
    ~/Library/Application Support/Google/GoogleUpdater
    /Library/Application Support/Google/GoogleUpdater

The first pair belongs to Keystone's layout, the second to GoogleUpdater. /Library/Google is a parent, not a single updater. Do not remove the parent to deal with one component, or confuse it with the separate Application Support paths.

The same migration document locates updater.log inside each GoogleUpdater directory. If seeking support, note the relevant path and update error rather than deleting the evidence first.

Treat Background Jobs as Part of Updating

Launch agents and daemons are another part of the updater installation, not another cache to clear. Chromium's updater manual describes app installation and registration, while its Mac installation code creates the launchd jobs.

A background entry alone does not establish a fault. Before changing it, record what is installed and whether updates succeed. Do not delete a collection of Google launch jobs simply to make the list shorter.

    Make One Controlled Update Check

Use Google's Chrome update instructions before changing updater files. The following are the English interface labels.

    1. Open Chrome and record the version under Help, then About Google Chrome.
    2. Let that page check for updates and record any error.
    3. If an update is offered, use Relaunch after saving work.
    4. Return to the same page and check the version and result again.

An update failure needs its own diagnosis. Google's failed-update guide covers missing installation files and provides a Mac Google Software Update reinstall link. If you previously removed updater files, use that official repair route rather than inventing replacements or repeatedly deleting more files.

If You Are Removing Google Apps

Removing a working updater interrupts the update mechanism Chrome uses. Keeping Chrome while deleting its updater is therefore a maintenance change, not routine storage cleanup.

The updater manual says it removes itself when no managed applications remain, and that detecting removed Mac app bundles can take a few hours. App installation and registration can also install the updater again, so a returning updater is not by itself evidence of malware. Do not assume every launch of every Google app reinstalls it.

For Chrome removal and profile retention, follow uninstall Chrome on Mac and the tested Chrome guide. For Drive, use the tested Drive guide before touching sync data. For a process that survives app removal, see apps still running after uninstall.

Google's Earth Pro update page notes that some direct installers do not auto-update. Check the actual installation instead of treating every Earth copy as proof of the same updater dependency.

    Where Mole Fits

Mole Mac excludes shared Keystone and GoogleSoftwareUpdate paths imported from Homebrew cleanup lists when uninstalling one app. Its startup scan also reads launch agents and daemons, but whether a particular row can be toggled depends on its valid label and protection checks. A startup row is not proof that the updater is unused, so keep shared updating in mind before changing it.

    FAQ

Can I Delete GoogleUpdater and Keep Chrome?

Removing the updater interferes with Chrome's documented update service. Keep it while using Chrome, and investigate a specific update error instead.

    Why Does the Updater Return?

Applications can install and register an updater again. Check what was installed or repaired, rather than assuming the folder's return proves a fault.

Should Google LLC Disappear After Removing Chrome?

Do not use that publisher label as the success criterion. Check other installed Google apps, allow for updater self-removal, and verify each remaining app's update behavior.

Mac running low on space or slowing down? Mole can clean out the junk, remove apps completely and keep macOS in shape.
