How to uninstall Tuta Mail on Mac

Keep your Tuta password, recovery code and required mail exports before removing Tuta Mail. Verify wanted mail in the web app before deleting local data; the official help distinguishes credentials, recovery and offline access. A recovery code is not a mailbox export.

    Quit and remove the app

After saving and checking the backup, quit Tuta Mail with Cmd + Q and move the Mac app from Applications to the Trash. Leave independently saved work and other applications in place.

    Review local data

    • ~/Library/Application Support/tutanota-desktop was observed locally and can hold desktop data; keep it until exports and web access are checked.
    • ~/Library/Caches/de.tutao.tutanota and ~/Library/Caches/de.tutao.tutanota.ShipIt are cask targets.
    • ~/Library/Preferences/de.tutao.tutanota.plist holds preferences. Do not delete the shared Apple recent-document parent directory; the cask names an app-specific file pattern.

After checking mail exports and web access and quitting, use Shift + Command + G in Finder to open ~/Library/Application Support/tutanota-desktop and the exact cache/preference paths above. Move only the Tuta item you chose to discard to the Trash. Keep mail exports and the shared Apple recent-document parent.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl "Tuta Mail|tutanota"
    ls -ld "/Applications/Tuta Mail.app" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/tutanota-desktop"

No process output means this name was not found, not that every helper has gone. Check any match against the app’s actual executable path. A missing-path error from ls means only that location is absent; permission errors leave its state unknown. A surviving folder can be intentional data to keep.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The cask has no separate uninstall helper. Zap includes tutanota-desktop, caches, preferences and an Apple recent-document-list path. Mole can suppress zap when any listed data is unchecked or outside its approved scope; a direct zap can still remove the whole desktop-data folder.

    To uninstall without zap, use:

    brew uninstall --cask tuta-mail

Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap tuta-mail runs Homebrew’s full zap list without consulting Mole’s checkboxes.

    Current cask.

Removing the Mac app does not cancel a paid Tuta plan or delete the account. Account deletion is a separate action in Tuta’s settings and cannot be undone, as the official account help explains.

    What Mole lists

Mole selects the app and exact cache/preference rows by default. ~/Library/Application Support/tutanota-desktop is listed unchecked when Remove data and settings with apps in General > Cleaning is off. Turning it on can preselect eligible desktop data; uncheck it to keep local mail and settings. It does not guess an entire Tuta data family or treat remote mail as local leftovers.

    What this test covered

On September 21, 2026, the official Tuta Mail Mac app was opened and uninstalled without logging in. The app, preferences and Darwin cache were removed; a 1.9 MB tutanota-desktop folder was not listed in that run. Mole now lists that leaf for review. Offline mail, recovery, subscriptions and Homebrew installation were not tested.
