How to uninstall Mixxx on Mac
Before removing Mixxx, copy its settings directory and keep your audio files separately. The Mixxx manual identifies the library database, cues, playlists and controller mappings there. This guide covers the Mac app from the official disk image and existing Homebrew installations.
Quit and remove the app
Finish recording or broadcasting, save your changes and quit Mixxx with Cmd + Q. For the disk-image app, move Mixxx.app from Applications to the Trash after checking the backup. Do not delete the folders that hold your tracks.
Review local data
~/Library/Containers/org.mixxx.mixxx/Data/Library/Application Support/Mixxxis the documented sandbox settings directory. Copy it before removing its parent container.~/Library/Application Support/Mixxxis the older Mac location, not a disposable music library.~/Music/Mixxxis in Homebrew’s zap list; inspect and back up its contents first. The manual’s~/.mixxxpath is for Linux, and the Mac test did not create it.
After checking the backup and quitting, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the settings or legacy support location above. To remove the sandbox data, open ~/Library/Containers/org.mixxx.mixxx; its scripts are at ~/Library/Application Scripts/org.mixxx.mixxx. Move only the Mixxx item you chose to discard to the Trash. Inspect ~/Music/Mixxx separately before deleting anything there, keeping wanted tracks and independently chosen audio folders. A macOS refusal leaves the item unremoved.
Check the result
pgrep -ifl Mixxx
ls -ld /Applications/Mixxx.app "$HOME/Library/Containers/org.mixxx.mixxx" "$HOME/Music/Mixxx"
No process output means this name was not found, not that every helper has gone. Check any match against the app’s actual executable path. A missing-path error from ls means only that location is absent; permission errors leave its state unknown. A surviving folder can be intentional data to keep.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The cask has no separate uninstall helper. Its zap list includes the Mixxx container, Application Scripts folder and ~/Music/Mixxx, so a manual zap can remove library settings and music stored there.
To uninstall without zap, use:
brew uninstall --cask mixxx
Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap mixxx runs Homebrew’s full zap list without consulting Mole’s checkboxes.
What Mole lists
Mole selects the app and its exact org.mixxx.mixxx container and Application Scripts rows by default when present. The container can hold your library, so back it up and uncheck it if you want to keep the library. Your independently chosen audio folders are not a blanket uninstall target.
Remove data and settings with apps in General > Cleaning can also preselect eligible reviewed app data. Check every selected library row and leave wanted data unchecked; shared audio and tracks need their own review.
What this test covered
On September 21, 2026, Mixxx 2.5.6 from the official arm64 disk image was opened and removed without a Homebrew receipt. The app and scripts were removed, but a 228 KB container remained after macOS refused permission. No music collection, recording, broadcasting or Homebrew zap was verified.
