How to uninstall jamovi on Mac

Save the .omv analysis file and keep your original dataset before uninstalling jamovi. Its getting-started guide treats saving and exporting results as separate actions. This page covers the Mac desktop app, not removal of a jamovi Cloud account.

    Quit and remove the app

Save your work and quit jamovi with Cmd + Q. Move the Mac app from Applications to the Trash after checking the backup. Keep separately saved projects and source data in place.

    Review local data

    • ~/Library/Application Support/jamovi held local application data in the test; copy needed contents before removal.
    • ~/Library/Logs/jamovi and ~/Library/Preferences/org.jamovi.jamovi.plist are in the cask.
    • Save your .omv, templates and source files outside the application support folder. The cask also lists ~/Library/Saved Application State/org.jamovi.jamovi.savedState and ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments/org.jamovi.jamovi.sfl*. Open the saved-state path in Finder, then open ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments and inspect only filenames starting with org.jamovi.jamovi.sfl; the asterisk is a filename pattern. Move only confirmed, unwanted jamovi items to the Trash after backup. Keep the shared recent-document parent and other apps’ files.

After confirming your data and settings backups and quitting, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open ~/Library/Application Support/jamovi, ~/Library/Logs/jamovi and ~/Library/Preferences/org.jamovi.jamovi.plist when present. Move only the verified jamovi item you chose to discard to the Trash. Keep .omv analyses, templates, source files and the shared Apple recent-document parent.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl jamovi
    ls -ld /Applications/jamovi.app "$HOME/Library/Application Support/jamovi" "$HOME/Library/Preferences/org.jamovi.jamovi.plist"

No process output means this name was not found, not that every helper has gone. Check any match against the app’s actual executable path. A missing-path error from ls means only that location is absent; permission errors leave its state unknown. A surviving folder can be intentional data to keep.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The cask has no separate uninstall helper. Zap includes jamovi’s support folder, logs, preferences and saved state, plus an Apple recent-document-list path. Mole can suppress zap when any listed data is unchecked or outside its approved scope; a direct Homebrew zap is different.

    To uninstall without zap, use:

    brew uninstall --cask jamovi

Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap jamovi runs Homebrew’s full zap list without consulting Mole’s checkboxes.

    Current cask.

    What Mole lists

Mole selects the app and attributable cache/preference rows by default. ~/Library/Application Support/jamovi is listed unchecked when Remove data and settings with apps in General > Cleaning is off. Turning it on can preselect eligible app data; uncheck wanted settings to keep them. The app’s own exact recent-document-list file can be selected, while the shared parent stays protected. Independently saved analyses are not scanned as leftovers.

    What this test covered

The official Mac app was tested on September 21 and again with a development build on September 26, 2026. The later official download identified itself as 2.7.38, rather than the version label recorded by the cask, and all ten listed items were removed. No real analysis, cloud sync, data restoration or cask installation was tested.
