How to uninstall Finicky on Mac
Keep your Finicky routing rules and choose another default browser before removing the app. The official project stores a JavaScript or TypeScript configuration at ~/.finicky.js. This guide covers the official Mac app, while keeping browser profiles separate.
Quit and remove the app
If Finicky is your default browser, choose the browser you want in macOS settings first. Quit Finicky from its menu bar, then move Finicky.app to the Trash. Check that links open in the intended browser afterward; separately installed browser extensions can be managed in those browsers.
Data to keep or review
~/.finicky.jscontains your routing rules. Keep a copy before uninstalling; the current cask zap does not include it.~/Library/Caches/Finickyand~/Library/Logs/Finickywere observed. For other identifier-matched cache or WebKit rows, use the full path shown in Mole’s details.- The cask’s only zap target is
~/Library/Preferences/se.johnste.finicky.plist. Browser profiles and system default-browser state are not this file.
After backing up wanted settings, open Finder and press Shift + Command + G. Paste each full path separately, inspect its contents and move only confirmed app-owned data to the Trash.
Check the result
pgrep -ifl Finicky
ls -ld /Applications/Finicky.app "$HOME/.finicky.js" "$HOME/Library/Preferences/se.johnste.finicky.plist"
No process output means this name was not found, not that every helper has gone. Check any match against the app’s actual executable path. A missing-path error from ls means only that location is absent; permission errors leave its state unknown. A surviving folder can be intentional data to keep.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The cask has no separate uninstall helper. Zap removes only the exact preferences file; it does not remove your routing configuration or switch the system default browser.
To uninstall without zap, use:
brew uninstall --cask finicky
Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap finicky runs Homebrew’s full zap list without consulting Mole’s checkboxes.
What Mole lists
Mole selects the app and attributable cache, log and WebKit rows by default. Its uninstall list does not serve as a routing-rule backup or a default-browser reset. Keep the custom configuration and choose your replacement browser before confirming removal.
These are the defaults with “Remove data and settings with apps” turned off. Enabling that preference can also select eligible reviewed app data; shared stores, protected profiles and agent archives keep their individual review or remain locked. Check the final list before confirming.
What this test covered
On September 25, 2026, Finicky 4.2.2 was copied from the official Mac disk image and tested with a development build of Mole. The first-launch request to make it the default browser was not accepted. Selected app data was removed, while protected system WebKit temporary state was retained. Default-browser restoration, custom rules and browser extensions were not tested.
