How to uninstall FineTune on Mac
Keep wanted FineTune volume, EQ and routing settings before removing the menu bar app. The official project describes per-app audio controls and custom presets. This guide covers the official Mac disk-image app, not removal of other audio tools or device drivers.
Quit and remove the app
Stop any audio work that depends on FineTune, then quit it from its menu bar menu. Check playback through your usual output device before moving FineTune.app to the Trash. Do not delete CoreAudio or system audio settings as uninstall remnants.
Data to keep or review
~/Library/Application Support/FineTuneheld local app data in the test. Copy wanted presets or configuration before reviewing the parent.- The recorded app identifier is
com.finetuneapp.FineTune; the preference check below uses~/Library/Preferences/com.finetuneapp.FineTune.plist. For other listed cache or HTTP rows, use the full path shown in Mole’s details rather than the identifier alone. - The cask’s zap list only names
~/Library/Application Scripts/com.finetuneapp.FineTuneand~/Library/Containers/com.finetuneapp.FineTune; this is narrower than all locally observed paths. Independently saved EQ files and other audio software remain separate.
After backing up wanted settings, open Finder and press Shift + Command + G. Paste each full path separately, inspect its contents and move only confirmed app-owned data to the Trash.
Check the result
pgrep -ifl FineTune
ls -ld /Applications/FineTune.app "$HOME/Library/Application Support/FineTune" "$HOME/Library/Preferences/com.finetuneapp.FineTune.plist"
No process output means this name was not found, not that every helper has gone. Check any match against the app’s actual executable path. A missing-path error from ls means only that location is absent; permission errors leave its state unknown. A surviving folder can be intentional data to keep.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The cask has no separate uninstall helper. Zap names its exact Application Scripts and Containers directories. Do not assume this zap stanza covers every setting or support directory found by Mole.
To uninstall without zap, use:
brew uninstall --cask finetune
Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap finetune runs Homebrew’s full zap list without consulting Mole’s checkboxes.
What Mole lists
Mole selects the app, exact preferences and attributable cache/HTTP rows by default. With “Remove data and settings with apps” off, the FineTune support parent stays unticked; turning it on can select the folder when it passes the app-data checks. Wanted presets can be retained by leaving data unchecked; shared CoreAudio state is protected.
These are the defaults with “Remove data and settings with apps” turned off. Enabling that preference can also select eligible reviewed app data; shared stores, protected profiles and agent archives keep their individual review or remain locked. Check the final list before confirming.
What this test covered
On September 25, 2026, FineTune 1.9.0 was copied from the official disk image and uninstalled with a development build of Mole. The recorded selected app data was removed. Device routing, populated preset recovery, restored playback after uninstall and the published Mole package were not verified.
