How to uninstall Sol on Mac
Before removing Sol, copy any notes, custom links, scripts and clipboard entries you want to keep. This guide covers the Mac app from the official project and the Homebrew cask.
Quit and remove the launcher
Quit Sol from its menu bar menu. If you enabled launch at login, turn it off in Sol or in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions. Then move Sol.app from Applications to the Trash. Removing the launcher does not remove the apps or documents it opens, or cancel subscriptions to services you used through it.
Review local data
Keep a backup before removing settings. The current Sol source stores configuration, notes, runtime state and custom scripts under ~/.config/sol; its clipboard store also uses that folder for pasted images. This is personal data, not just cache. Its contents and recovery were not covered by the uninstall test below.
| Location | What to do |
|---|---|
~/.config/sol |
Back up notes, scripts and clipboard data before deciding whether to remove it |
~/Library/Preferences/com.ospfranco.sol.plist |
Keep for a reinstall, or remove to reset app preferences |
~/Library/Caches/com.ospfranco.sol |
App cache observed in the test; can be removed after quitting |
~/Library/Caches/SentryCrash/sol |
Crash data observed in the test; review this leaf without deleting the shared SentryCrash folder |
Check the result
These commands only check the process and the usual app location:
pgrep -ifl '/Sol.app/Contents/'
ls -ld '/Applications/Sol.app'
ls -ld "$HOME/.config/sol"
No output from pgrep means no matching process was found. “No such file or directory” from ls means that path is absent; a permission error means it could not be checked. A surviving configuration folder does not mean Sol is still installed. Keep it if you want its data, and check your actual app location if you installed elsewhere.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The Sol cask quits Sol and unregisters com.ospfranco.sol-LaunchAtLoginHelper during ordinary uninstall:
brew uninstall --cask sol
Adding --zap also removes ~/Library/Application Support/com.ospfranco.sol, ~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.ospfranco.sol, the preferences plist, and the helper's ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.ospfranco.sol-LaunchAtLoginHelper and ~/Library/Containers/com.ospfranco.sol-LaunchAtLoginHelper folders. Back up wanted data first. The current zap list does not include ~/.config/sol. A direct Homebrew command does not follow Mole's checkboxes; Mole uses zap only when its complete scope passes the review gate.
What Mole lists
Mole selects the app, its bundle-ID preferences, bundle-ID cache and temporary Darwin cache by default when present. The lowercase SentryCrash/sol leaf is listed for review and is not selected by default. Check the review list before removing app data; ~/.config/sol has no dedicated Sol rule and is not part of the verified rows above.
What this test covered
On October 5, 2026, Sol 2.1.362 and four data rows were moved to the Trash with a source-built Mole. The four rows were preferences, bundle-ID cache, temporary Darwin cache and the reviewed SentryCrash/sol leaf. Their original paths were absent afterward, and a name-based recheck found no matching leftover in the inspected scope. Launch at login was not enabled, so removal of an active login helper was not tested. This was not a Homebrew uninstall test or a verification of saved notes, clipboard history and custom scripts.
