How to uninstall SmartGit on Mac

Back up SmartGit's settings before resetting them. The official file-location guide puts macOS settings under ~/Library/Preferences/SmartGit/<major-version>; they include repository lists, hosting-provider configuration and credentials. Your Git repositories are separate.

    Save repositories and settings

Finish active Git operations and save wanted changes. While SmartGit is available, open Help › About › Information and note Settings Path, as the vendor's file-location guide describes. This identifies the actual version directory, including any custom location, rather than using <major-version> literally. Quit SmartGit with Cmd + Q, copy that directory to a backup location and confirm the copy, then move SmartGit.app from Applications to the Trash. Do not remove other versions' settings merely because you are removing one app.

The vendor also documents downloaded updates in ~/Library/Application Support/SmartGit/updates. Review this separately from the preferences directory. Removing the app does not authorize deleting project folders, Git metadata or independently managed signing keys.

After verifying the backup and quitting SmartGit, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the recorded settings directory. Move only that version's settings you choose to remove to Trash, keeping the SmartGit parent and other versions' data. Remove the updates directory only if no remaining SmartGit installation uses it; its contents can support more than one version.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl SmartGit
    ls -ld /Applications/SmartGit.app "$HOME/Library/Preferences/SmartGit" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/SmartGit/updates"

Check the executable path of any matching process. Missing paths are absent locations, not proof that every app setting is gone. Permission errors leave a location unverified. Confirm your wanted repositories and backed-up settings remain accessible.

If you installed it with Homebrew

    brew uninstall --cask smartgit

The cask manages a SmartGit executable link. Its zap list names ~/Library/Preferences/com.syntevo.smartgit.plist, the whole ~/Library/Preferences/SmartGit directory and ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.syntevo.smartgit.savedState. The whole preferences directory can contain settings for several versions; the update directory above is not in this zap list.

A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap smartgit resets those locations regardless of Mole's checkboxes. Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected.

    What Mole lists

Mole selects the app and exact bundle-owned preferences, cache and saved state when present. The named SmartGit preferences folder is unchecked with Remove data and settings with apps off in General > Cleaning; enabling it can preselect eligible reviewed app data. Uncheck the settings folder if you want to keep credentials or another version's setup. Shared version settings, repositories and independently managed signing keys remain separate from app removal.

    What this test covered

SmartGit 26.1.052 from the official Mac package was launched and removed on September 21, 2026. The selected SmartGit preferences directory and preference file were removed with the app. No ~/.smartgit location was created during that test. It did not verify recovery of saved credentials, repositories, downloaded updates or a Homebrew installation.

Mac running low on space or slowing down? Mole can clean out the junk, remove apps completely and keep macOS in shape.
