How to uninstall Piezo on Mac
Keep your recordings and wanted recording settings before uninstalling Piezo. The current manual says to quit the app and move it to Trash. This guide covers the official Mac app and Homebrew cask piezo, with a separate note for older ACE-based editions.
Finish recording and check which edition you have
Stop the recording and confirm that its audio file has been saved outside the app bundle. Copy wanted ~/Library/Preferences/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo.plist settings to a backup location before removing app data.
If you use an older ACE-based edition, its legacy manual calls for Piezo › Uninstall ACE first. Complete that guided removal while the app is available. The current edition does not need that legacy step. Then quit Piezo with Command + Q and move Piezo.app from Applications to Trash. Do not manually remove shared audio-engine files that other Rogue Amoeba apps may still use.
Review only Piezo's local state
After confirming the backup and quitting Piezo, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the locations below. Move the Piezo items you no longer need to Trash, leaving recordings and shared Rogue Amoeba settings in place.
| Location | Keep or remove |
|---|---|
| ~/Library/Caches/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo | App cache. |
| ~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo | Local HTTP state. |
| ~/Library/Preferences/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo.plist | Recording preferences. Back up wanted settings before resetting. |
| ~/Library/WebKit/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo | Local WebKit data. |
These are named by the current cask. Your recordings remain at the location where you saved them. Keep shared com.rogueamoeba.audiounit.plist settings outside this uninstall. Removing the app does not cancel subscriptions or delete an account.
Check the result
pgrep -il Piezo
ls -d /Applications/Piezo.app "$HOME/Library/Caches/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo" "$HOME/Library/WebKit/com.rogueamoeba.Piezo"
No process output means no matching name is running. Inspect a match in Activity Monitor. Printed paths remain, missing-path errors mean absence, and permission errors leave them unknown. These app-data checks do not prove an older ACE backend is gone; use its official guided uninstall.
If you installed it with Homebrew
brew uninstall --cask piezo
The ordinary cask uninstall requests quit and removes the app. Direct brew uninstall --cask --zap piezo also removes the four cache, HTTP, preference and WebKit locations above, regardless of Mole's checkboxes. Its current stanza does not uninstall a legacy shared ACE engine.
Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected.
What Mole lists
Piezo's exact app preferences, caches, HTTP storage and WebKit state are selected by default when present. These are app-state rows, not a selection of your audio recordings or shared Rogue Amoeba engine settings.
What this test covered
Piezo 1.9.10 was copied from the official package to Applications and uninstalled on September 21, 2026, without installing ACE or a Homebrew receipt. The app and local preference/cache/HTTP/WebKit data went to Trash; temporary WebKit data returned permission errors. Real recording, audio-backend removal and recovery of populated settings were not verified.
