How to uninstall OmniPlayer on Mac

Keep videos, subtitles and screenshots before removing OmniPlayer. Its publisher's listing describes playback settings, recent progress and screenshot exports; saved media is separate from the player. This guide covers the Mac App Store edition, whose recorded bundle was OmniPlayerStore.app.

Save state and remove the player

Stop playback, verify wanted media and screenshots, then quit OmniPlayer. If retaining settings, copy the existing main container and app group below to an independent backup and verify it before clearing originals. Move the App Store app from Applications to the Trash in Finder. Its bundled Safari and Quick Look extensions leave with the app; keep other apps' extensions. If you have a renewable VIP subscription, manage it separately from uninstalling.

    Review recorded data

    • ~/Library/Containers/com.mac.utility.media.player and ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.mac.utility.media.player: main sandbox data and scripts support.
    • ~/Library/Containers/com.mac.utility.media.player.OmniPlayerSafariExtension and ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.mac.utility.media.player.OmniPlayerSafariExtension: the bundled Safari extension's local data and scripts.
    • ~/Library/Containers/com.mac.utility.media.player.OmniPlayerThumbnailExtension and ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.mac.utility.media.player.OmniPlayerThumbnailExtension: the bundled thumbnail extension's local data and scripts.
    • ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.mac.utility.media.player and ~/Library/Application Scripts/group.com.mac.utility.media.player: app-group state, remove only after backup and exclusive ownership are confirmed.

These exact paths were recorded locally. Open existing entries with Finder's Go › Go to Folder and trash only unwanted confirmed-owned data, keeping parents and your media files.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl OmniPlayer
    ls -ld "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.mac.utility.media.player" "$HOME/Library/Group Containers/group.com.mac.utility.media.player"

No process match means no arguments matched the name; identify surviving matches before quitting them. A printed folder remains and is expected if retained. A missing-path error means that exact folder is absent; other errors are inconclusive. Keeping original movies is the intended result, and this query does not verify restored settings.

    What Mole lists

The main container/scripts and confirmed own bundled Safari/thumbnail extension folders are selected by default. The exact own app group and its scripts folder can also be selected by default, but deletion still verifies that no other installed app claims them. Back up and uncheck wanted state. The data-removal option does not bypass shared-group safety checks.

    What this test covered

The Mac App Store app was removed on September 21 and retested on September 26, 2026. The later 2.1.22 run removed selected main and extension data but kept the app group when exclusive ownership could not be confirmed during the run. Playback, populated-library restoration, network shares and VIP cancellation were not tested.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
