How to uninstall MWeb Standard on Mac

Back up your complete MWeb library and its attachments before removing MWeb Standard from the Mac App Store. In Preferences › Library & Backup, check the actual library location. For this edition’s iCloud library, the official library documentation names ~/Library/Containers/com.coderforart.iOS.MWeb/Data/Library/Application Support/MWebLibrary. Do not edit the active CloudKit store as a cleanup step.

    Quit and remove MWeb Standard

Save edits, verify wanted content on another connected device if using iCloud and such a device is available, then quit MWeb. Copy the complete library outside its sync location and check the backup while the app is closed. Keep external Markdown folders and image attachments. After checking your backup, move MWeb.app from Applications to the Trash. Only consider removing the main ~/Library/Containers/com.coderforart.iOS.MWeb container if you intend to reset the local library and settings.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The Homebrew cask is a different edition, MWeb Pro, with MWeb Pro.app:

    brew uninstall --cask mweb-pro

The current cask has no separate quit stanza, so quit Pro first. Its additional zap scope is:

    • ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.coderforart.MWeb*
    • ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments/com.coderforart.mweb*.sfl*
    • ~/Library/Application Support/MWeb
    • ~/Library/Containers/com.coderforart.MWeb*
    • ~/Library/Cookies/com.coderforart.MWeb*.binarycookies
    • ~/Library/Preferences/com.coderforart.MWeb*.plist

The wildcard ranges may cover multiple Pro identities; inspect actual matches and keep another edition’s library. Direct brew uninstall --cask --zap mweb-pro uses the whole list independently of Mole’s checkboxes. Mole uses zap only when the complete scope passes selection and shared-data checks, otherwise selected remnants use its own removal flow. These Pro targets are not the Standard container named above.

    Check the result

    ls -ld "/Applications/MWeb.app"
    ls -ld "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.coderforart.iOS.MWeb"

Printed paths remain. No such file or directory means that exact item is absent; permission errors leave it unconfirmed. A retained container is expected when keeping the local library. This does not verify the iCloud copy or a separate Pro installation.

    What Mole lists

The exact Standard container ~/Library/Containers/com.coderforart.iOS.MWeb is selected by default when present and unprotected; uncheck it to retain the library. Remove data and settings with apps is off by default; enabling it includes eligible reviewed data, while shared and protected items retain their boundaries. Back up before accepting either selection.

    What this test covered

The Mac App Store app was removed on September 21, 2026, initially leaving its container after a system denial. A September 26 repeat with a source-built Mole removed the app, main container, scripts and selected cache. No personal library or iCloud recovery was tested, and this was not a Homebrew MWeb Pro uninstall.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
