How to uninstall Mochi on Mac

Back up Mochi cards, attachments and review history before removing its Mac app. The backup guide offers Settings › Export everything for a native .mochi export and a full user-folder copy. Markdown and CSV exports omit review history and other metadata, so use the native export when you need those details.

    Save data and quit

Finish edits and export first. If you use cloud sync, confirm wanted content is available in your web account, then copy your export outside every sync/removal root and inspect its cards and attachments. Quit Mochi and copy its entire existing user folder too. The vendor names ~/Library/Application Support/Mochi, while the recorded Mac folder and cask use ~/Library/Application Support/mochi; inspect the actual spelling on your disk, without deleting another app's directory. This folder includes content, settings and login state, not only cache.

After backup, move Mochi.app from Applications to the Trash in Finder. Keep wanted decks and backup files, and manage a subscription separately from local app removal.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The cask declares no separate uninstall step and removes its managed app without zap:

    brew uninstall --cask mochi

Zap additionally removes ~/Library/Application Support/mochi, ~/Library/Logs/Mochi, ~/Library/Preferences/com.msteedman.mochi.plist and ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.msteedman.mochi.savedState. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap mochi ignores Mole's checkboxes. Mole uses zap only when its entire scope passes selection, ownership and safety checks; selected remnants otherwise use its own Trash flow.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl mochi
    ls -ld "$HOME/Library/Application Support/Mochi" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/mochi"

No process match means no arguments matched this pattern. Printed folders remain, expected if retained; on a case-insensitive disk both spellings can resolve to the same folder. Missing-path errors concern only the named paths; other errors are inconclusive and do not verify card restoration.

    What Mole lists

The display-name support folder starts unchecked with Remove data and settings with apps off; enabling it can preselect eligible unshared app data. Exact app-ID preferences and window state follow their default rules. Uncheck wanted cards/history after backup; the option does not establish a cloud copy or export completeness.

    What this test covered

On September 22, 2026, the official-download Mochi 26.9.2 app was copied into Applications, launched and removed with its selected lowercase support folder. Child entries were already absent after the parent moved to the Trash. Populated-deck restoration, sync/account changes and Homebrew were not tested.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
