How to uninstall MenubarX on Mac
Save bookmarks, wanted downloads and work in web pages before removing MenubarX. Its official site describes a menu-bar browser with bookmarks and iCloud support; do not treat closing a window as quitting the whole app, or assume website forms have already been saved. This covers the recorded Mac App Store edition and the separate Homebrew cask menubarx.
Save web state and quit
Finish or save open website work, retain wanted bookmark addresses and downloaded files, and verify any iCloud state you intend to keep on another available synced device. Quit MenubarX, then copy the existing main container below to a private backup outside every sync root and removal folder. Verify the copy before deleting local data; a copied browser store does not promise that website sessions can be restored.
Move MenubarX.app from Applications to the Trash in Finder. Check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions for a remaining MenubarX helper, and keep files downloaded to locations you chose.
Review actual local paths
The App Store record identifies ~/Library/Containers/com.app.menubarx and ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.app.menubarx, plus the app-specific ~/Library/Caches/CloudKit/com.app.menubarx. The container can hold local browsing state, so keep it until wanted data is safely preserved; the CloudKit cache is not an independent cloud backup.
The current cask also lists ~/Library/Containers/com.app.menubarx-helper and ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.app.menubarx-helper. Inspect those helper entries individually. In Finder use Go › Go to Folder, skip missing paths and remove only unwanted confirmed-owned items, keeping the parents and other browsers' data.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The cask declares no separate ordinary uninstall step beyond its managed application.
brew uninstall --cask menubarx
Zap removes the main and helper Containers and Application Scripts locations above, including local browsing state. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap menubarx ignores Mole's checkboxes. Mole uses zap only when the whole scope passes selection, ownership and safety checks; selected remnants otherwise use its own Trash flow.
Check the result
pgrep -ifl MenubarX
ls -ld "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.app.menubarx" "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.app.menubarx-helper"
No process match means the pattern found no matching arguments; identify a surviving match before quitting it. Printed folders remain, expected if retained. A missing-path error means that exact folder is absent; other errors leave the result unknown. Neither this query nor an empty browser window proves that website or iCloud data was saved.
What Mole lists
The main container and scripts folder, app-specific CloudKit cache and attributed temporary entries are selected by default. Back up and uncheck wanted browsing state. The separate login helper’s data needs review. With Remove data and settings with apps off those reviewed helper rows are unchecked; enabling it can preselect eligible unshared helper data, while protected data still needs its own review or remains locked.
What this test covered
The Mac App Store app was removed on September 21 and retested on September 26, 2026. The later MenubarX 1.7.6 run removed the app and selected original review paths; separate WebKit temporary entries were still seen in a later rescan. No signed-in website, populated bookmarks, iCloud recovery or Homebrew uninstall was tested.
