How to uninstall Marta on Mac
Finish file operations and back up Marta's configuration before uninstalling it. The official uninstall page identifies ~/Library/Application Support/org.yanex.marta as the folder to save for configuration, custom themes and plugins. This guide covers the official Mac app and Homebrew cask marta.
Finish operations and save configuration
Wait for wanted copies and moves to finish, and open destination files to confirm them. Quit Marta with Cmd + Q, then copy the support folder above to a backup location outside the removal list if you want your setup after reinstalling. Check the backup before removing the app or its data.
After quitting and checking any wanted configuration backup, move Marta.app from Applications to Trash. Do not use Reset State and Exit to finish an ongoing transfer: the reset-state documentation says that action exits immediately even when background operations are still running. Files you browse are separate from Marta's own state.
Review local state and the optional launcher
After verifying the configuration backup and quitting Marta, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the locations below. Move the Marta items you no longer need to Trash, keeping the backup and files you browsed in the app.
| Location | Keep or remove |
|---|---|
| ~/Library/Application Support/org.yanex.marta | Configuration, custom themes and plugins. Save wanted contents before removal. |
| ~/Library/Caches/org.yanex.marta | App cache. |
| ~/Library/Preferences/org.yanex.marta.plist | App preferences. Keep if wanted for reinstalling. |
| ~/Library/Saved Application State/org.yanex.marta.savedState | Saved app state. |
| ~/Library/HTTPStorages/org.yanex.marta | HTTP state named by the cask and recorded in the test. |
The command-line guide offers an optional /usr/local/bin/marta symlink to /Applications/Marta.app/Contents/Resources/launcher. It is not configured by default. If you created it, run readlink /usr/local/bin/marta and confirm that its target is the launcher inside the Marta app you are removing. Only then open /usr/local/bin with Finder's Go to Folder and move that single marta link to Trash. A regular file, different target or failed check needs separate review. Keep the bin parent, independently installed terminal tools and the files they work on.
Check the result
pgrep -il Marta
ls -ld /Applications/Marta.app "$HOME/Library/Application Support/org.yanex.marta" "$HOME/Library/HTTPStorages/org.yanex.marta"
ls -l /usr/local/bin/marta
No process output means no matching name is running. Printed paths remain, missing-path errors mean absence, and permission errors leave the result unknown. The final command shows whether that optional path exists and, for a symlink, its target. A different target or a regular file needs separate ownership review. Uninstalling does not cancel a separate Patreon membership.
If you installed it with Homebrew
brew uninstall --cask marta
The cask removes its managed app without zap. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap marta also removes all five app-data locations above, including configuration, themes and plugins, regardless of Mole's checkboxes. Its list does not include the manually created command-line link.
Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected.
What Mole lists
The exact bundle-owned support folder, preferences, caches and web state are selected by default when present. The support folder contains configuration, themes and plugins, so back it up or uncheck it before removal. Extra cask-derived paths retain review unless independently attributed; enabling Remove data and settings with apps can preselect eligible app-specific data while shared locations still need an ownership check. The optional launcher and files displayed in Marta are separate from these app-data rows.
What this test covered
Marta 0.8.2 was copied from the official package into Applications and removed on September 21, 2026, without a Homebrew receipt. The app, bundle support data, HTTP state and temporary cache went to Trash, with no review items recorded. No ~/.marta or ~/.config/marta data was written during that run. Configuration restoration, plugins, the optional launcher and a Homebrew installation were not verified; the run does not establish those undocumented dot-folders as cleanup targets.
