How to uninstall Lunacy on Mac
Save wanted Lunacy documents as local .sketch files before removing app data. Autosaved work can remain in the app's data folder even when you have never saved a document yourself. This guide covers the official Mac app and Homebrew cask lunacy; cloud accounts and other operating systems are separate.
Recover unsaved work while the app is available
Use Help › Open App Data Folder and inspect its Documents folder before uninstalling. The official FAQ explains how to recover temporary documents from there. Open wanted documents in Lunacy and save copies outside the app-data folder, then reopen those copies. For cloud documents, confirm the web copy and keep a local copy of work you need.
Quit Lunacy with Command + Q, then move Lunacy.app from Applications to Trash. Removing the local app does not cancel an Icons8 subscription, delete your account or erase cloud documents.
Separate document data from app files
After reopening the document backups and quitting Lunacy, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the container and Lunacy-specific .local location below. Move the app-data items you choose to remove to Trash only after checking their contents. Keep the protected group folder, the Icons8 parent and your local or cloud document copies.
| Location | Keep or remove |
|---|---|
| The Documents folder revealed by Help › Open App Data Folder | Can hold autosaved or unsaved work. Recover wanted documents before removing its parent data folder. |
| ~/Library/Containers/com.icons8.Lunacy | Local container observed in the test. Back it up before removal; do not assume a container only holds disposable caches. |
| ~/Library/Group Containers/L87ZGZ3STE.icons8.Lunacy | Protected group folder observed in the test. Keep it outside ordinary app-file removal. |
| ~/.local/share/Icons8/Lunacy | Data target named by the current cask. Review it if present, preserving wanted documents. |
The last location comes from the Homebrew cask, not a confirmed location in the recorded Mac uninstall. Do not remove the whole Icons8 parent or infer a Linux cleanup command for macOS.
Check the result
pgrep -il Lunacy
ls -d /Applications/Lunacy.app "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.icons8.Lunacy" "$HOME/Library/Group Containers/L87ZGZ3STE.icons8.Lunacy" "$HOME/.local/share/Icons8/Lunacy"
No process output means no matching name is running. Printed paths remain, missing-path errors mean absence, and permission errors leave the result unknown. Do not force-delete a protected folder to make this check silent.
If you installed it with Homebrew
brew uninstall --cask lunacy
The ordinary cask uninstall removes the app without zap. Direct brew uninstall --cask --zap lunacy additionally targets ~/.local/share/Icons8/Lunacy and does not consult Mole's checkboxes.
Mole skips --zap for this cask because its .local target is outside the locations in the uninstall review. It still removes the leftovers you selected.
What Mole lists
Lunacy's own exact bundle-ID container and app scripts are selected by default when present, so back up wanted local work and uncheck the container if you need it. App-named support folders are unchecked with Remove data and settings with apps off; enabling it can preselect eligible reviewed app data. Group stores remain subject to their protection and ownership checks, and that preference does not authorize removal of a protected group folder. The cask's .local target alone does not prove Mole will list it for the tested app.
What this test covered
Lunacy 14.1 was copied from the official package to Applications and uninstalled on September 21, 2026, without signing in or using a Homebrew receipt. The app, confirmed temporary cache and its own app scripts went to Trash. The 9.5 MB container returned permission errors and the group folder remained protected. Cloud sync, document recovery and a populated design-library uninstall were not verified.
