How to uninstall GitFiend on Mac

Keep your Git repositories before removing GitFiend. The official support repository describes GitFiend as an application that reads and operates on Git repositories; removing its desktop settings is a separate decision from deleting those repositories.

    Save work and quit

Finish or stop active Git operations, save wanted working-tree changes and quit GitFiend with Cmd + Q. Keep repository folders, their .git directories and any independently managed signing keys. Then move GitFiend.app from Applications to the Trash.

The local uninstall test found ~/Library/Application Support/GitFiend. Treat this as app data and back it up if you want the same desktop state after reinstalling. It is not a reason to remove a repository or a shared Git configuration.

After verifying that backup and quitting GitFiend, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open that support folder and the full preferences and saved-state paths in the Homebrew section below. Move only the GitFiend items you no longer need to Trash, keeping repositories, shared Git configuration and signing keys.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl GitFiend
    ls -ld /Applications/GitFiend.app "$HOME/Library/Application Support/GitFiend" "$HOME/Library/Preferences/com.tobysuggate.gitfiend.plist"

A matching process needs its executable path checked; its name alone does not prove it belongs to this installation. A missing-path error means that location is absent. A permission error leaves its state unknown. Check your retained repositories separately.

If you installed it with Homebrew

    brew uninstall --cask gitfiend

The cask also manages the gitfiend command wrapper. Its zap list includes ~/Library/Application Support/GitFiend, ~/Library/Preferences/com.tobysuggate.gitfiend.plist and ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.tobysuggate.gitfiend.savedState.

Running brew uninstall --cask --zap gitfiend directly removes that app data regardless of Mole's checkboxes. Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected.

    What Mole lists

Mole selects the app and exact bundle-owned preferences, cache and saved state when present. The display-name support folder is unchecked with Remove data and settings with apps off in General > Cleaning; enabling it can preselect eligible reviewed app data. Uncheck settings you want to keep. Shared Git configuration, repositories, .git and independently managed signing keys are outside these app-removal decisions.

    What this test covered

GitFiend 0.45.3 from the official Mac package was launched and removed on September 21, 2026; its support folder and app-specific settings were removed after selection. A September 26 development-build retest recorded running-app detection, process grouping, update detection and no surviving entries from the reviewed removal list. It did not establish repository restoration, signing-key recovery or a Homebrew installation.

Mac running low on space or slowing down? Mole can clean out the junk, remove apps completely and keep macOS in shape.
