How to uninstall Default Folder X on Mac
Back up Default Folder X settings and finish open or save dialogs before removing the app. The official FAQ covers quitting and trashing versions 5 and 6. Version 4 uses a different installer-based removal flow; do not apply its preference-pane paths to this app.
Save settings and remove the app
Quit Default Folder X from its menu bar menu before copying settings. If you want to reuse favorites and settings, copy ~/Library/Preferences/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5.plist and ~/Library/Application Support/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5 when present to a backup location outside the removal list, then check the copies. These are the backup locations documented by the FAQ and match the historical bundle ID recorded for the tested 6.3 app. Do not substitute 6 merely because the app's version begins with 6.
After quitting and checking any wanted backup, move Default Folder X.app from Applications to Trash. If Finder toolbar buttons remain as question marks, hold Command and drag them out of the toolbar, as the FAQ describes. Remove only Default Folder X's own login entry in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions if it remains.
Review extension data
The test observed these two extension containers:
~/Library/Containers/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5.DrawerButtonExtension~/Library/Containers/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5.MenuButtonExtension
After verifying the settings backup and quitting Default Folder X, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the two containers above and the X5 support and preferences locations listed earlier. Back up wanted container contents, then move the Default Folder X items you choose to remove to Trash. Other installed channels may use different identities; keep Setapp data if that copy remains. Do not delete the whole ~/Library/Application Support/.com.stclairsoft vendor directory without confirming what else uses it, or reset macOS permission databases to uninstall this app. Removing the app does not cancel a Setapp subscription.
Check the result
pgrep -ifl 'Default Folder X'
ls -ld '/Applications/Default Folder X.app' "$HOME/Library/Application Support/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5" "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5.DrawerButtonExtension" "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5.MenuButtonExtension"
If pgrep finishes without an error and prints nothing, it found no command line matching Default Folder X; that does not rule out every related helper. Check any listed process's executable path in Activity Monitor before deciding it belongs to this app. Printed paths remain, missing-path errors mean absence, and permission errors leave the result unknown. Check Finder toolbar shortcuts separately; they are not proof the application is still installed.
If you installed it with Homebrew
brew uninstall --cask default-folder-x
The current cask first requests that Default Folder X quit, then removes its managed app without zap. Its zap list uses com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX6 for support data, caches, preferences, Drawer and Menu extension scripts and containers. It also includes .com.stclairsoft support data and an app-named recent-document list under ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist. That 6 spelling differs from the tested app and the FAQ's backup paths.
Direct brew uninstall --cask --zap default-folder-x runs the whole cask list regardless of Mole's checkboxes. Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected. An exact app-owned recent-document list may leave during uninstall, while its shared parent and system-owned lists stay protected.
What Mole lists
Exact bundle-owned preferences, support data and caches are selected by default when present. Its own bundle-prefixed extension containers and scripts are also selected when attributed to the app; differently identified helpers retain review. Back up settings or uncheck them to keep them. Enabling Remove data and settings with apps can preselect eligible reviewed app data, while shared vendor data and other installed channels' data retain their ownership checks. A cask path named with a different major-version identity does not establish that it belongs to this installed copy.
What this test covered
Default Folder X 6.3 was copied from the official package into Applications and removed on September 21, 2026. Its recorded bundle ID was com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX5. There was no Homebrew receipt, helper installation or Accessibility permission. The app, its Sentry crash cache and extension scripts went to Trash, while the Drawer and Menu containers returned permission errors. Full installer effects, settings restoration, permission revocation and complete extension-container removal were not verified.
