How to uninstall Chatbox on Mac

Export wanted conversations before removing Chatbox. The official data guide describes local chat history and an export through Settings > Data Management > Export Data. Save a JSON backup outside the app-data folder and check the exported file before continuing.

Quit and remove the desktop app

Stop active conversations, quit Chatbox with Cmd + Q, then move Chatbox.app from Applications to the Trash. Removing the desktop app is separate from cancelling an AI-service subscription.

The current vendor guide names ~/Library/Application Support/chatbox/; the tested Mac package instead wrote ~/Library/Application Support/xyz.chatboxapp.app. Check the location actually used by your installation and keep a copy if you want its history and settings. Do not substitute ChatGPT's data directory.

After verifying the exported backup and quitting Chatbox, press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open the data location your installation actually used. Move the Chatbox folder you choose to remove to Trash after checking its contents. Do not remove both possible paths blindly or touch ChatGPT's data.

    Check the result

    pgrep -ifl Chatbox
    ls -ld /Applications/Chatbox.app "$HOME/Library/Application Support/xyz.chatboxapp.app" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/chatbox"

Inspect matching process paths. A missing-path error means only that location is absent, while a permission error leaves it unverified. An app-data directory that you intentionally retained is not an uninstall failure.

If you installed it with Homebrew

    brew uninstall --cask chatbox

The cask defines its managed removal. The cask quits xyz.chatboxapp.app. Its zap list includes the tested support directory, exact cache, logs, preferences, saved state and WebKit data, plus app-specific recent-document files under ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments/xyz.chatboxapp.app.sfl*. Do not remove the shared parent directory.

A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap chatbox runs its whole zap list regardless of Mole's checkboxes. Mole checks Homebrew's full removal list and skips --zap when it reaches unchecked data, shared files or anything it cannot verify. It still removes the leftovers you selected.

    What Mole lists

Mole selects the app and exact bundle-owned support data, caches, logs and preferences when present. The support-data row can contain chat history and settings, so export first or uncheck it. Individually owned recent-document files can be offered; the shared Apple parent is protected. These rows do not authorize removing ChatGPT or unrelated AI tools.

    What this test covered

On September 21, 2026, the official Mac package of Chatbox 1.23.3 was launched and removed. The app, bundle-owned support directory and logs were removed. ChatGPT was left alone. The test did not verify export/import recovery, a subscribed service or a Homebrew installation.

Mac running low on space or slowing down? Mole can clean out the junk, remove apps completely and keep macOS in shape.
