How to uninstall Alter on Mac

Back up Alter chats and meeting transcripts before removing the Mac app. Its local-data guide says those records are local and are not backed up by cloud sync; shared web conversations are not a full backup. If you only want to reinstall or downgrade, the vendor recommends replacing the app rather than doing a data cleanup.

Copy local data before removal

Use the data-location shortcut in Alter settings if available. The recorded Mac folders were ~/Library/Application Support/Alter and ~/Library/Application Support/com.wearedevx.alter; the vendor identifies ~/Library/Application Support/Alter/SpeakerIdentity for saved speaker voiceprints. If you published a conversation and want its public link gone, use that conversation's Share › Remove action before removing the app, as described in the local-data guide. Finish recording and save wanted text, quit Alter, then copy the entire existing folders outside all sync and removal roots and verify them. Keep any separately configured local model storage and other tools' models.

After backing up, follow Apple's Finder removal instructions and move Alter.app from Applications to the Trash. Deleting local app data does not itself unpublish that link or cancel a plan.

The process pattern can also match another program's arguments, so inspect a surviving path before acting. No match means this pattern found none, not that every integration is absent. Printed data folders remain, expected if retained. Missing-path errors apply only to those folders; other errors are inconclusive and do not establish chat restoration or public-link removal.

What Mole lists

The exact app-ID support folder is selected by default, including any user state inside it. The display-name Alter support folder starts unchecked with Remove data and settings with apps off; enabling it can preselect eligible unshared data. Back up both and uncheck wanted state before removal, without deleting shared model parents.

What this test covered

On September 22, 2026, the official-download Alter 1.8.1 app was copied into Applications, opened at its welcome screen and removed with both support folders. Accessibility and System Events access were not granted. Meeting capture, populated-chat restoration, public-link/account changes and Homebrew were not tested.
