How to uninstall Thor on Mac
Thor opens or switches to an app with a keyboard shortcut. It is open source, with builds on the project's GitHub page and a Mac App Store listing. Your shortcut list is the only thing worth keeping; the test assigned no shortcuts, so it did not confirm which file holds them once you add some. If you want to keep them, note them down or copy the preferences file in the table below before you start. This guide covers the GitHub release and the Homebrew cask thor.
Quit and remove the app
- Quit Thor from its menu bar icon.
- Open System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions. If you turned on launch at login in Thor, its helper appears there; switch it off. The test never turned it on, so nothing was registered.
- Open Finder, go to Applications and drag Thor to the Trash.
Where the data lives
Press Shift + Command + G in Finder to open each path. Skip any path that is not on your Mac.
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
~/Library/Preferences/me.alvinzhu.Thor.plist |
Preferences | Copy it first if you want your setup back later, then remove. Selected by default. |
~/Library/HTTPStorages/me.alvinzhu.Thor |
Network storage | Remove. Selected by default. |
~/Library/Application Support/Thor |
A folder named after the app. It was empty in the test | Remove. Mole lists it for review and does not select it. |
~/Library/Containers/me.alvinzhu.Thor, ~/Library/Application Scripts/me.alvinzhu.Thor |
Sandbox folders named in the Homebrew cask's zap list, which the App Store build would use | Not present in the test of the GitHub build. Remove them if they exist and you are done with Thor. |
A temporary cache for me.alvinzhu.Thor sits in your per-user cache folder (getconf DARWIN_USER_CACHE_DIR prints it), and Mole removes it with the app.
Check the result
pgrep -il thor
ls -ld "/Applications/Thor.app" "$HOME/Library/Preferences/me.alvinzhu.Thor.plist" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/Thor"
- No output from
pgrepmeans no process with Thor in its name is running. A printed line may also be an unrelated process whose name contains those letters, so read the name before you quit it. - A path printed by
lsstill exists. No such file or directorymeans the path is gone.
If you installed it with Homebrew
brew uninstall --cask thor
The cask asks me.alvinzhu.Thor to quit and removes the app. Its zap list names only ~/Library/Application Scripts/me.alvinzhu.Thor and ~/Library/Containers/me.alvinzhu.Thor, not the preferences file. Running brew uninstall --cask --zap thor removes those two and does not read Mole's checkboxes. Mole adds --zap only when every path on the zap list sits inside ~/Library, none of them touches a row you left unchecked, and no other installed app claims them, which this cask's short list can meet; the preferences and the other rows still go through Mole's own removal.
What Mole lists
Mole selects the app, the preferences file, ~/Library/HTTPStorages/me.alvinzhu.Thor and the temporary cache. It lists ~/Library/Application Support/Thor for review without selecting it.
These defaults assume “Remove data and settings with apps” in General › Cleaning is off. With it on, Mole also ticks ~/Library/Application Support/Thor.
What this test covered
On October 20, 2026, the test downloaded Thor 1.5.16 (universal) from the GitHub release the Homebrew cask uses, copied it to Applications without running brew install, opened it past the Gatekeeper prompt and removed it with a source-built Mole with the review row ticked. Launch at login stayed off, so its helper was never registered. Mole moved four rows and the app to the Trash, and nothing was left. Status showed one Thor row with 4 processes. Mole's update page read it as a Sparkle app; no update was run. Assigned shortcuts, launch at login, the Mac App Store build, a Homebrew-managed uninstall and Mole's notarized release build were not tested.
