How to uninstall DiskWise on Mac
Check the Trash before removing DiskWise. Everything DiskWise cleans goes to the Trash, and its Undo only lasts for the current session, so put back anything you still want with Undo while the app is open, or with Put Back in Finder afterwards, before the Trash is emptied. This guide covers the direct download and the Homebrew tap; the project README lists both, plus a Mac App Store build that ships without the command-line tool.
Remove agent registrations
The direct download carries a diskwise command at /Applications/DiskWise.app/Contents/MacOS/diskwise, which AI agents run as an MCP server. Removing the app leaves each registration behind, pointing at a file that no longer exists. Remove the ones you added before or after the app:
- Claude Code:
claude mcp remove diskwise. - Codex:
codex mcp remove diskwise. - Cursor, Zed, ZCode, OpenCode and Claude Desktop: delete the
diskwiseentry from~/.cursor/mcp.json, thecontext_serversblock of~/.config/zed/settings.json,~/.zcode/cli/config.json,opencode.jsonorclaude_desktop_config.json.
The command-line tool keeps its plans and an append-only operations log in ~/Library/Application Support/DiskWise/agent. Keep that folder if you want a record of what the agents moved.
Quit and remove the app
Quit DiskWise. For the direct download, move /Applications/DiskWise.app to the Trash. Its README says the app runs no daemon and has no updater, and this test found no launch item or login item.
If you installed it from the third-party tap, remove it with Homebrew instead:
brew uninstall --cask dreamofxm/diskwise/diskwise
The tap's cask lists three files for --zap: ~/Library/Caches/com.dreamofxm.diskcleaner, ~/Library/Preferences/com.dreamofxm.diskcleaner.plist and ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.dreamofxm.diskcleaner.savedState. Move whichever of them exist to the Trash, or add --zap to the command above.
For the App Store build, move DiskWise to the Trash from /Applications.
Check the result
pgrep -ifl diskwise
ls -ld /Applications/DiskWise.app "$HOME/Library/Preferences/com.dreamofxm.diskcleaner.plist" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/DiskWise"
grep -n "DiskWise.app" "$HOME/.claude.json" "$HOME/.codex/config.toml" "$HOME/.cursor/mcp.json"
No output from pgrep means DiskWise is not running. For ls, a "No such file or directory" line means that item is gone; a printed line means it is still there, which is expected for the agent folder if you kept it. grep prints each line that still points at the app; "No such file or directory" for a config file only means that agent is not set up on this Mac.
What Mole lists
Mole lists whichever of DiskWise's preferences, cache, saved window state and temporary cache folder exist, all selected by default. ~/Library/Application Support/DiskWise, which holds the agent plans and log, is listed but not selected.
For a Homebrew install, Mole removes the app through Homebrew without --zap, because the tap is not in Homebrew's main catalog and Mole cannot review its zap list. The three files that list names are covered by Mole's own rows above. After the app is gone, the uninstall result lists the lines in ~/.claude.json, ~/.codex/config.toml and ~/.cursor/mcp.json that still name the app, with Reveal in Finder; Mole only reads those files and never edits them.
These defaults assume "Remove data and settings with apps" is off. Opting in also selects eligible reviewed app data; shared stores and protected data keep their individual review or stay locked.
What this test covered
On October 5, 2026, DiskWise 1.7 was removed with a source-built Mole. The preferences and temporary cache folder were moved to the Trash, and a search by name afterwards found nothing left; no launch item or login item was found. The App Store build, the Homebrew tap, agent registrations and the Status page were not tested.
