How to Clear Spotify Cache on Mac and Keep What You Need

    StoragePublished October 26, 2026Updated October 28, 20267 min read

Spotify can use several gigabytes on a Mac without having a large app bundle. Some of that space is playback cache, some is music or podcasts saved for offline listening, and some is local settings and account state. Start with Spotify's own Clear cache control, because deleting a folder with Cache in its name can also remove downloads you meant to keep.

    Separate Cache From Downloads

Decide what you want to lose before choosing a cleanup method. A smaller Spotify folder is not a useful result if your next flight starts without your downloaded playlists.

Data What it does What to do
Playback cache Keeps temporary copies for playback Clear through Spotify first; listening builds it again
Offline downloads Makes chosen music and podcasts available without a connection Keep, or remove selected downloads inside Spotify
Sign-in and local settings Keeps this installation's account state and preferences Leave alone during cache cleanup
Your own audio files Original files you added for local playback Keep the originals; they are not Spotify cache

Clearing local storage and deleting a playlist from your account are different actions. Do not delete a playlist to remove its downloaded copy, and do not treat your own audio files as replaceable streaming data.

Clear the Cache Inside Spotify First

Spotify's desktop storage instructions give this route in the desktop app, rather than the web player. The labels below are from the English interface:

    1. Click your profile picture and choose Settings.
    2. Scroll to Storage.
    3. Record the cache and download sizes shown, then click Clear cache and confirm if asked.
    4. Check the storage display again before doing anything in Finder.

The button targets cache, whereas downloaded content has its own removal controls. Use it before a trip while you still have a connection, then check a wanted download offline instead of assuming every local copy survived. Normal listening fills the cache again, so there is little benefit in repeatedly clearing it after every session.

If the button is missing, confirm that you are in the installed desktop app and look at Spotify's current instructions, rather than following an old mobile screenshot. If Spotify will not open, skip to folder inspection below, but preserve anything whose contents you cannot identify.

Find the Storage Location Before Touching Folders

The same Spotify storage page documents Change location for moving the cache. In Storage, record the current storage path, including any download location your app shows, before changing anything. A location change moves storage elsewhere; it does not mean you have reduced the total amount stored. Keep the destination available when Spotify needs it.

Two Mac folders worth measuring are:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Spotify/PersistentCache
    ~/Library/Caches/com.spotify.client

These are also the two stores Mole identifies for review. Neither name proves that every file inside is disposable. Spotify's folder layout has changed across desktop versions, and a configured download location matters more than a path copied from somebody else's Mac. In particular, do not empty PersistentCache just because its name contains Cache.

For read-only size measurements after quitting Spotify, Terminal can show both folders:

    du -sh "$HOME/Library/Application Support/Spotify/PersistentCache" "$HOME/Library/Caches/com.spotify.client"

A missing-folder message means that location is absent on this Mac, not that Spotify needs repairing. Do not create it or substitute a broader parent. These are folder totals, which can include downloads; they are not a cache-only savings estimate.

    Remove Downloads Through Spotify

If downloads account for most of the space, clearing cache cannot solve that part. Spotify's offline listening instructions describe removing a download from its downloaded album or playlist. Open the item in your library and use its downloaded indicator to remove the offline copy, keeping the playlist itself.

Choose one you no longer need offline, remove that download, then check Storage again. Do not apply mobile-only instructions for removing all downloads to the Mac app. If something starts downloading again, check whether it is still marked for offline listening before deleting its files another time.

Removing a downloaded copy trades local space for a future download and its network cost. It does not turn Spotify's stored files into a backup you can play independently. Keep original local music separately, and verify wanted downloads before leaving your connection behind.

If You Still Need to Remove a Folder Manually

Quit Spotify with Command-Q before touching its files. In Finder, use Go to Folder with Shift-Command-G and paste one exact path from above. The ~ means your home folder, so retain it.

Inspect one store at a time and compare it with the offline location you recorded. If that store contains wanted downloads, or you cannot establish what it contains, leave it and use Spotify's controls. There is no universal cache-only child folder here that this guide can tell every Mac owner to delete.

If you accept losing the contents of a particular store and can download them again, move only that exact folder to the Trash. Leave the rest of ~/Library/Application Support/Spotify intact, then reopen Spotify and test playback, sign-in, settings and a wanted offline playlist. Keep the removed folder in the Trash during these checks. Recovery is possible only while it remains there, and putting files back is not a guarantee Spotify will recognize old downloads.

Deleting the whole support folder is a broader reset. Spotify's clean reinstall procedure removes it along with ~/Library/Caches/com.spotify.client and ~/Library/Caches/com.spotify.client.helper, and warns that downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again after reinstalling. That is a troubleshooting escalation, not the first step for freeing cache space. The Spotify uninstall guide explains the keep-or-remove decision for that broader operation.

Verify the Space and Handle Problems

Compare the same folder measurements before and after, and check the Mac's available storage. Items in the Trash remain on disk until permanently removed. After confirming Spotify works and you no longer need the removed items, delete those specific items from the Trash rather than emptying unrelated files with them.

If space barely changes, check whether downloads dominate or the configured location is elsewhere. If the folder grows while you play music, that is consistent with cache rebuilding. If whole playlists return, inspect their download selection. If sign-in was lost after manual removal, stop removing more folders, sign back into the same account and check your library. Use the reinstall route only if a client problem remains, accepting its download cost.

    Where Mole Fits

Mole Mac's Clean view lists the two stores above under App Caches & Logs when eligible, with both unchecked for review. This Spotify cache selection does not target the whole support folder or original audio elsewhere, but selecting either store can still remove downloads inside it. Unchecked means you decide, not that the contents are protected from a later explicit selection. Start with Spotify's own control when you want to keep offline listening.

    FAQ

Will Clearing the Cache Delete My Playlists?

Clearing playback cache is different from deleting account playlists. Folder removal can cost offline availability, so check downloads separately and keep your own local audio files.

Why Does the Cache Come Back?

Spotify stores playback data again as you listen. Repeated clearing means repeated fetching; use the download controls when intentionally saved content is the larger problem.

Can I Delete the Entire Spotify Support Folder?

Only as a deliberate local-data reset, accepting lost settings, possible sign-in prompts and new downloads. For ordinary cache cleanup, use Clear cache and leave the parent folder alone.
