Clean a Windows Screen Without Accidental Keystrokes
Touching the keyboard while wiping a display can scroll a page or type into a form. Turning the PC off avoids that, but for a quick wipe before returning to work, Clean Screen can temporarily cover the display and block ordinary keyboard input.
Clean Screen and Keep Screen On are different tools
Mole's tray Clean Screen entry turns displays black and temporarily intercepts ordinary keystrokes. Dust is easier to see and accidental typing is reduced. Keep Screen On instead maintains temporary operation for downloads or presentations.
Save work before starting. Use Windows locking when stepping away to protect the session. A black display and temporary input interception are not account locking, shutdown or a replacement for the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
Choose a duration before starting
Mole Settings offers 1, 2 or 5 minutes, or no automatic end. Start the tool from the tray panel or Mole menu. Timed sessions exit when their duration ends, so choose enough time before beginning.
The feature does not establish that background work has paused. Applications may continue running. Return to the owning app to verify download completion or saved documents.
Exit with the fixed shortcut or hold the button
Move the pointer to reveal the exit control, then hold it for one second. The fixed exit combination is:
Ctrl + Alt + Win + Esc
Bare Esc does not exit, preventing one accidental key from returning to the work screen. A customized Clean Screen shortcut can also exit; the fixed combination remains available. Windows' Ctrl + Alt + Del is not blocked.
A black overlay does not disconnect the hardware
A black image can leave the display powered and the keyboard and touchpad physically connected. Mole intercepts ordinary keystrokes; this does not establish that every touchscreen, pen or peripheral is disabled. The black image also says nothing about whether liquid cleaning is appropriate.
For a light dry wipe, save work and close active message-entry fields before starting the overlay. For wet cleaning, keycap removal or connector cleaning, follow the computer and display manufacturer's shutdown and disconnection instructions. Keeping a download running should not decide whether hardware can safely be cleaned while powered.
Check the coating on your particular display
Glossy, matte and touch displays can have different surface treatments. One cleaning fluid may not suit them all. Microsoft's Surface care instructions, for example, prohibit applying liquid directly to the device. Starting a black-screen tool does not change that requirement, and Surface-specific material guidance is not a rule for every brand.
Check your model's instructions before choosing a dry cloth or an approved cleaning method. After exiting, test input and confirm you are back in the original window. A Windows lock screen or a powered-off display will not have Mole's exit control; those are separate states.
The tool handles input, not cleaning materials
Clean Screen does not determine whether a liquid is suitable for a display or handle liquid entering a keyboard. Follow the monitor and computer manufacturer's instructions. Shut down when actual power-off is required rather than preserving a background task during unsuitable powered cleaning.
Afterward, return to the original window and check input and task state. Windows help lists the other tray controls and shortcuts. For downloads and presentations, use the temporary keep-awake guide.
