How to uninstall Insomnia on Windows
Where your Insomnia projects live decides what removing the app can lose. Kong's storage guide describes three kinds: Local Vault projects stay entirely on this PC, Git Sync projects live in your own repository, and Cloud Sync projects are stored in Kong's cloud. Local Vault data exists only in the app's own data folder, so export it before you remove anything. This guide covers Insomnia installed per-user from the Insomnia.Insomnia winget package.
Export local projects first
In Insomnia, open Preferences › Data and click Export all data, as described in Kong's import and export reference. Save the file outside Insomnia's own folders and check that it opens. Git Sync projects are already in your repository; push any unpushed changes. Cloud Sync projects stay in your Kong account after the app is gone.
Quit Insomnia first
Close every Insomnia window. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Insomnia process still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Insomnia, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Insomnia.Insomnia
Where the data lives
Kong documents the Windows data folder as %APPDATA%\Insomnia, with files named insomnia.<resource>.db. Help › Show App Data Folder opens it from inside the app.
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\Insomnia |
Every local project, request, environment and history in insomnia.*.db files |
Keep it until your export opens; remove it last, or keep it for a reinstall |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\insomnia-updater |
Downloaded update installers | Safe to remove |
Because the database files are unencrypted, remove the data folder rather than leaving it on a shared or handed-over PC once you are sure you no longer need it.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Insomnia -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Insomnia.Insomnia
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\insomnia"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Insomnia"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Insomnia"returningTruemeans your local projects are still there, which is expected if you kept that row. A permission error instead ofTrueorFalseis a different result; look into it rather than assuming anything.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Squirrel uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Insomnia on its own.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not cancel a paid Insomnia plan or sign you out of your Kong account; Cloud Sync projects stay in that account regardless of what you do locally. Manage your subscription from your account on the web.
What Mole lists
For Insomnia installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder and the user Start Menu's Kong folder are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\Insomniais listed but not selected, since it holds your local projects; the caches inside it (Cache, Code Cache, Crashpad, and the GPU-related caches) are separate rows selected by default, and theinsomnia.*.dbfiles stay with the unselected folder row.- An
insomnia://link registration still pointing at the removed program is listed and selected, backed up to a.regfile before removal.
What this test covered
Tested with Insomnia 13.3.0 installed through winget, per-user scope. The test installed it from an elevated session, so its uninstaller asked for administrator access; a normal per-user install does not. No account sign-in, Cloud Sync or Git Sync was tested.
