WeChat Taking Up Space on Windows: Free Up the C: Drive
WeChat for Windows fills the C: drive because it keeps your chat history, every image, video and file you received, and its own caches inside your Documents folder by default, and that folder sits on C: unless you moved it. Most of that space is chat data, not cache, so the way to get it back is WeChat's own storage location and cleanup settings, not deleting folders in File Explorer.
This page splits WeChat's footprint on Windows into what regenerates and what may be the only copy, shows where the old 3.x layout and the WeChat 4.x layout live, and explains how to move the data off C: without breaking it. The short version: caches and old logs can go, the chat databases never go by hand, and anything you delete from the chat folders cannot be fetched back once WeChat's server no longer keeps it.
Where WeChat for Windows keeps its data
There are two layouts, depending on which WeChat you have run on this PC.
| Folder | Version | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
Documents\WeChat Files\<wxid> |
3.x | Chat databases (in Msg) plus received images, videos, files and caches (in FileStorage) |
Documents\xwechat_files\<wxid> |
4.x | Chat databases (in db_storage) plus received media, files and caches |
%APPDATA%\Tencent\xwechat |
4.x | Login state, settings, plugins, logs and the built-in browser's profiles |
<wxid> is one folder per signed-in account, so two accounts on one PC means two of everything. Tencent's FAQ for WeChat for Windows 4.0 and later explains why the folder changed: 4.x uses a new storage architecture and creates an xwechat_files folder on the same drive as the old data, and the old and new data cannot be mixed. You cannot copy a WeChat Files folder into xwechat_files and expect it to work.
If you upgraded from 3.x, you may have both folders. The same FAQ says the upgrade prefers hard links when it brings the old chat history across. A hard link is a second name for the same bytes on disk, so deleting the old WeChat Files folder after an upgrade can free much less than File Explorer reports for it. Measure the drive's free space before and after rather than trusting the folder size.
Cache, chat history and received files are not the same
Sort WeChat's data into four kinds before you touch anything:
| Kind | Examples | If it is deleted |
|---|---|---|
| Cache | Thumbnails, the built-in browser's Cache, Code Cache and GPUCache, avatar cache | Rebuilt when needed; no chat is lost |
| Logs | Dated .xlog files under %APPDATA%\Tencent\xwechat\log |
Nothing you use; only diagnostic history |
| Received media and files | Chat images, videos, documents people sent you | Gone from this PC; older ones may not download again |
| Chat databases | Msg (3.x), db_storage (4.x) |
Your chat history on this PC is gone |
Deleting the Msg or db_storage folder, or the whole <wxid> folder, deletes your chat history on this PC. Unless you made a backup or the same chats still exist on your phone, nothing on the PC brings them back. Media works the same way: an old photo or video may no longer download again from WeChat, and the copy in xwechat_files can be the last one.
Received files are the trap in between. They look like downloads, but many people treat WeChat as their file inbox and never save those documents anywhere else. Open the files you care about and save them to a folder of your own before clearing any of them.
Quit WeChat before you look inside
WeChat keeps its databases open while it runs, and closing its window usually leaves it running in the notification area. Right-click the WeChat icon in the notification area and choose to quit WeChat from its menu, then open Task Manager and check that no Weixin, WeixinExt or WeChatAppEx process is left. These are the 4.x process names; the built-in browser and mini programs run as WeChatAppEx.
Deleting or moving files while WeChat holds them can leave a half-written database or fail partway through a folder, which is worse than not cleaning at all. Quitting first also matters before measuring, since the current month's folders keep changing while WeChat runs.
Clear space inside WeChat first
WeChat's own settings know which files belong to which chat, so start there:
- Storage location. Tencent's 4.x FAQ points to 设置 › 账号和存储 › 存储位置 (Settings › Account and Storage › Storage location) to see where the data lives. Labels can differ between versions and languages, so look for the account and storage page in Settings if the wording does not match.
- Storage cleanup. Recent versions also have a storage screen that shows how much space each chat takes and lets you remove images, videos and files by chat. The exact label changes between releases. That screen can remove chat content too, so read each option before confirming, and leave the chat-history options alone if you only want space.
- Received files. Before clearing a busy group chat, save the documents you still need with WeChat's save-as action to a folder outside
xwechat_files.
Clearing media from one large group chat often frees more than every cache combined, and you choose exactly which conversation pays for it.
Back up chat history before deleting or moving
Make a backup before any destructive step, including an uninstall or a reinstall of Windows. Tencent's backup and restore guide for WeChat for Windows describes the steps: connect the phone and PC to the same network, click the More button at the bottom left of WeChat for Windows, choose 迁移与备份 (Migrate and Backup), then 备份与恢复 (Backup and Restore), and pick the chats on your phone. Keep both WeChat windows open until it finishes. The English version of the same help article calls it Backup and Restore under the lower-left icon.
Two details from that guide matter for space. Each backup is stored on the PC and you can delete old backups you no longer need, and old backups can add up on C:. Restoring to the phone merges the backup with the chats already there and does not delete anything on the phone.
Move WeChat's data off C: with its own setting
If the data is legitimately large and you want to keep it, move it rather than delete it. Use WeChat's storage location setting, not a folder you drag in File Explorer and not a symbolic link or junction you create by hand. WeChat's setting updates the path WeChat reads; a link you create yourself is invisible to WeChat's own migration logic, and the 4.x upgrade already places its own hard links in that tree.
Tencent's 4.x FAQ shows how the setting is used after a Windows reinstall: change the chat history location in 设置 › 账号和存储 so the new storage location sits beside the old WeChat Files folder, restart WeChat and sign in again, and choose to use the existing data when WeChat finds it. The same FAQ warns about cloud folders: if the old data sits in a folder synced by a cloud drive and some files are online-only, WeChat cannot load them until you download everything locally.
That cloud case is common on Windows, because OneDrive's folder backup can move Documents into OneDrive. If your xwechat_files lives there, every chat image is also synced, and freeing it through OneDrive does not make the database local again. Free up space with OneDrive explains the online-only states. Picking a local folder on another drive, such as D:\WeChatData, keeps the history out of both C: and the sync.
A safe order
- Measure. Scan C: and find how large
Documents\xwechat_files,Documents\WeChat Filesand%APPDATA%\Tencent\xwechatreally are on this PC. Find large files on Windows covers the scan. - Back up the chat history with Migrate and Backup, and save received files you still need.
- Clear media by chat in WeChat's own storage screen.
- If the rest is still too much for C:, move the storage location to another local drive through WeChat's setting.
- Quit WeChat completely before cleaning anything outside it, and never delete
Msg,db_storage, a<wxid>folder or a whole folder with Tencent in its name.%APPDATA%\Tencentis shared with other Tencent apps such as QQ and WeCom.
If WeChat is only one part of a full C: drive, why the C: drive is full sorts the other owners.
Where Mole fits
Mole's Clean lists only the parts of WeChat 4.x that regenerate. In Communication it shows WeChat Cache, WeChat Code Cache and WeChat GPU Cache, the disk caches of WeChat's built-in browser under %APPDATA%\Tencent\xwechat\radium\web\profiles, and in Logs it shows WeChat Logs, only .xlog files untouched for a week. These rows are selected by default. While WeChat runs, its cache rows are held back and Clean offers to quit WeChat as one app. The same profiles' Local Storage and IndexedDB, WeChat's login and plugins, and everything in Documents\xwechat_files or Documents\WeChat Files are never listed by Clean, so the cached share is usually small next to the chat data. To see where the gigabytes actually are, scan C: in Analyze, open the folders in the map and open the location in File Explorer.
When you uninstall WeChat in Apps, Mole lists %APPDATA%\Tencent\xwechat for review and lists the chat history folder in Documents as personal data. Personal data starts unticked: it leaves only if you tick that row, choose Select all in the review, or choose Also remove user data, and it goes to the Recycle Bin, so look at the list before you confirm. When Documents is synced by OneDrive, Mole does not offer the chat history folder at all.
FAQ
Is it safe to delete the WeChat Files folder?
Not as a whole. It holds your 3.x chat databases in Msg along with received media and files, so deleting it deletes that history. If you already moved to WeChat 4.x and its history loaded, back up first and measure the drive before and after, since hard links can mean the folder frees little space.
Does clearing WeChat's cache delete my chats?
No. Caches such as the built-in browser's Cache and GPUCache come back when needed and do not hold messages. Chat images, videos and files are different: removing them removes them from this PC, and older ones may not download again.
Can I move xwechat_files to D: with a symbolic link?
Use WeChat's storage location setting instead. It tells WeChat where its data is and lets WeChat pick up the existing history, while a link you create by hand is something WeChat's own migration and upgrade steps do not know about.
Will Mole delete my WeChat chat history?
Clean never lists the chat history folders. Uninstall lists them as unticked personal data, which leaves only when you tick it, or use Select all or Also remove user data, and it goes to the Recycle Bin.
