How to uninstall XnView MP on Windows
Keep the XnView MP catalog and settings as well as your original images before uninstalling. A thumbnail database, a catalog and the photos themselves serve different purposes; do not discard one just because another still exists.
Save your data and quit
Open Settings › Paths to find the configuration and catalog locations, as the application’s author describes in the official forum. Close XnView MP before copying those files. Keep wanted categories, ratings and settings, and verify the original photo folders separately. A portable installation can keep configuration beside the application, so do not apply the installer procedure blindly to a ZIP copy.
Uninstall the tested package
In Windows 11, open Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find XnView MP, and choose Uninstall. In Windows 10, use Settings › Apps › Apps & features. Keep the installed program folder intact until its uninstaller finishes. If this was the winget package, first confirm its exact identity:
winget list --id XnSoft.XnViewMP --exact
If the successful query shows the intended installation, remove that package:
winget uninstall --id XnSoft.XnViewMP --exact
This follows the package’s registered removal method; portable packages use their package-manager removal instead. An error or a missing winget match is not proof that the app is absent: check the Windows app list and the original installation method. Follow any vendor confirmation or restart request after saving other work. See Microsoft’s uninstall command documentation.
Data and components to check
The following locations or components need separate decisions. A remaining folder is not automatically disposable.
| Location or component | What to keep or check |
|---|---|
Settings > Paths |
Use the configured locations for the INI file and catalog; do not assume one fixed profile path. |
| Original image folders | Retain originals and edited copies outside the program-removal scope. |
HKCU\Software\XnView\XnViewMP |
An empty settings shell retained after this test, along with its vendor parent. |
See XnView MP’s official documentation.
Check the outcome
winget list --id XnSoft.XnViewMP --exact
A successful package query with no matching row means that package registration was not found. A matching row means it still exists; an error leaves the result unknown. Keep deliberately retained data. Check Task Manager for a process whose executable belongs to this installation, and distinguish another version or a separate companion app before acting.
What Mole lists
The six reviewed targets were absent after removal. The empty XnViewMP user key and vendor parent remained. This test did not register file associations or context-menu entries, so it cannot establish their removal.
What this test covered
The official x64 Inno XnView MP 1.11.7.0 installation was tested machine-wide on an x64 PC and opened a test image before removal. An earlier ARM64 installer attempt failed and is not compatibility evidence. The offered upgrade, a personal catalog restoration and external-uninstall follow-up were not tested.
These results are from a development build of Mole. Other released builds were not individually tested.
