How to uninstall WizTree on Windows
WizTree keeps only a small settings file, no scan results or history worth backing up. It also asks for administrator access every time you open it, since it reads the disk's file table directly to scan quickly. This guide covers WizTree installed machine-wide from the AntibodySoftware.WizTree winget package.
Quit WizTree first
Close WizTree's window. Because it runs elevated, closing the window is usually enough, but if Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) still shows WizTree64.exe afterward, run Task Manager as administrator to end it before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find WizTree, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id AntibodySoftware.WizTree
This is a machine-wide install, so the uninstaller asks for administrator access.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\WizTree3 |
A small settings file, WizTree3.ini |
Safe to remove; WizTree's own uninstaller usually removes this on its own |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process WizTree64 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id AntibodySoftware.WizTree
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\WizTree"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\WizTree3"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\WizTree3"returningFalseis expected; WizTree's own uninstaller already removes this file in normal use.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs WizTree's own Inno Setup uninstaller and removes the same program files, Start Menu folder and right-click entries; it does not add anything on top.
What Mole lists
For WizTree installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder, the Start Menu folder and its shortcuts are selected by default; in this test WizTree's own uninstaller had already removed them.
%APPDATA%\WizTree3is listed but not selected.- The
WizTreeMFTfile-type registration WizTree adds, and its four right-click entries (on a folder, the desktop background, a drive, and a folder background), are selected by default; in this test the uninstaller had already removed these too.
What this test covered
Tested with WizTree 4.33 installed through winget, machine-wide scope. The first launch asked for administrator access; declining it once and reopening the app through an elevated task started it successfully. Not verified: scanning a real drive, and the free-space comparison view.
