How to uninstall Witsy on Windows
Witsy is a desktop AI assistant you connect to model providers with your own API keys. Its settings, the keys you entered and your conversation history stay in its data folder on this PC, so export any conversations you want and copy your keys somewhere safe before you remove that folder. This guide covers Witsy installed per-user from the installer in the KochavaStudios.Witsy winget package.
Quit Witsy first
Quit Witsy from its window or tray icon, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) that no Witsy.exe is still listed; it runs several of them at once. Witsy added no startup entry in this test.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Witsy, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id KochavaStudios.Witsy
The uninstaller removes the program and the desktop shortcut. In this test part of the program folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\witsy was still there afterwards, and the uninstaller left the data folder, the Start Menu folder named Nicolas Bonamy (after Witsy's author) and the entry Witsy added to your user Path.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\Witsy |
Settings, API keys, conversation history, caches and logs | Back up what you need; remove it for a clean start |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\witsy |
What remains of the program folder | Safe to remove once the uninstall has finished |
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Nicolas Bonamy |
Witsy's Start Menu folder | Safe to remove |
Your user Path variable |
An entry %LOCALAPPDATA%\witsy that Witsy added |
Harmless, but it points at a folder that is gone; remove that one entry as described below |
Windows Defender Firewall rules named witsy.exe |
Rules Windows created if you allowed Witsy through the firewall prompt | They point at a program that no longer exists; remove them yourself as below |
The Path entry
Open Settings › System › About › Advanced system settings › Environment Variables, select Path under your user's variables, choose Edit, and delete the line ending in AppData\Local\witsy. Leave every other line alone, then open a new terminal window for the change to apply.
Firewall rules
If you allowed Witsy through the Windows Security alert, open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security › Inbound Rules as an administrator and delete the rules named witsy.exe.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Witsy -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id KochavaStudios.Witsy
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\witsy"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Witsy"
[Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("Path", "User") -split ";" | Select-String "Local\\witsy"
Get-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "witsy.exe" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object DisplayName, Direction, Action
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means it is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Witsy"returningTruemeans your settings, keys and history are still there, which is expected if you kept them.Falsemeans they are gone.- The
Pathcommand printing a line means the entry is still there. No matching output from a confirmed successful query means it was removed. - The last command printing rows means the firewall rules are still there. No matching output from a confirmed successful query means they are gone.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Witsy, the Path entry or the firewall rules.
What Mole lists
For Witsy installed per-user from the winget package's installer:
- The program folder goes with the app row. The desktop shortcut and the Nicolas Bonamy Start Menu folder are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\Witsyis listed but not selected, since it holds your settings and history. The caches inside it (Cache,Code Cache,GPUCache, the Dawn shader caches andlogs) are listed on their own and selected by default.- A row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program is selected by default.
- The
witsy.exefirewall rules are named in the result and not removed. ThePathentry is not listed; Mole does not change environment variables.
What this test covered
Tested on September 29, 2026 with Witsy 3.5.2, the x64 installer from the winget package, per-user scope, installed from an elevated session and run under emulation on an ARM64 virtual machine. The uninstaller is Squirrel and ran silently. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test; the firewall rules and the Path entry stayed. Not verified: connecting a provider, real conversations, and exporting them.
