How to uninstall WireGuard on Windows
Keep a protected backup of any tunnel configuration you need before removing WireGuard. A configuration can contain a private key, so do not paste it into a public issue or store it in an unprotected shared folder.
Save your data and quit
Disconnect the tunnel before uninstalling. If this tunnel is the only connection to a remote PC, finish locally or arrange another connection first. Exit the manager after saving the configuration; do not manually delete network adapters or services as a substitute for the MSI uninstaller.
Uninstall the tested package
In Windows 11, open Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find WireGuard, and choose Uninstall. In Windows 10, use Settings › Apps › Apps & features. Keep the installed program folder intact until its uninstaller finishes. If this was the winget package, first confirm its exact identity:
winget list --id WireGuard.WireGuard --exact
If the successful query shows the intended installation, remove that package:
winget uninstall --id WireGuard.WireGuard --exact
This follows the package’s registered removal method; portable packages use their package-manager removal instead. An error or a missing winget match is not proof that the app is absent: check the Windows app list and the original installation method. Follow any vendor confirmation or restart request after saving other work. See Microsoft’s uninstall command documentation.
Data and components to check
The following locations or components need separate decisions. A remaining folder is not automatically disposable.
| Location or component | What to keep or check |
|---|---|
| Tunnel configuration backup | Retain the export securely and confirm which server and tunnel it belongs to. |
| WireGuard adapters and services | Let the official uninstaller manage its components. Do not remove another VPN’s adapter. |
See WireGuard’s official documentation.
Check the outcome
winget list --id WireGuard.WireGuard --exact
A successful package query with no matching row means that package registration was not found. A matching row means it still exists; an error leaves the result unknown. Keep deliberately retained data. Check Task Manager for a process whose executable belongs to this installation, and distinguish another version or a separate companion app before acting.
What Mole lists
The recorded review offered an owned shortcut, which the uninstaller had already removed. Unrelated system-service evidence and temporary files without proven exclusive ownership were retained.
What this test covered
WireGuard 1.1.1 was installed machine-wide through MSI on an x64 PC. Registration, program files and the checked processes were absent after uninstalling. A separate test covered older and newer packages, but VPN connectivity, key recovery and every Mole upgrade method were not verified.
These results are from a development build of Mole. Other released builds were not individually tested.
