How to uninstall Windows Terminal Preview on Windows
Back up Terminal Preview profiles and settings, and finish shell sessions before uninstalling the preview edition.
This guide covers Windows Terminal Preview 1.26.2734.0 installed for the current user with winget (MSIX, arm64). It is not the same package as the Windows Terminal stable build already on this PC. This test removed only the Preview.
Quit Preview first
Close windows whose path belongs to Windows Terminal Preview. This test saw Windows Terminal Host, with WindowsTerminal.exe and OpenConsole.exe. Leave the stable terminal that other work is using.
Remove it with its own uninstaller
A per-user MSIX does not need an administrator. Use the full package name from this PC. This test used:
Remove-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsTerminalPreview_1.26.2734.0_arm64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
You can also uninstall Windows Terminal Preview from Settings, Apps, Installed apps. Do not uninstall Windows Terminal.
Where the data is
After this uninstall the Preview Appx registration was gone, and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsTerminalPreview_8wekyb3d8bbwe was gone. The stable Microsoft.WindowsTerminal package was still installed.
The startup row is named Terminal Preview, not the full app name. It was off when installed. After uninstall that row was gone.
One firewall rule whose name starts with this package's full name was still there. Mole reports firewall rules and does not remove them.
Check the result
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.WindowsTerminalPreview
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.WindowsTerminal
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsTerminalPreview_8wekyb3d8bbwe"
- No output from that query does not prove the entry is absent when errors are suppressed. Confirm a successful query or an explicit missing-target result; a listed entry means it remains.
- Output from the second means the stable package is still installed.
Falsefrom the third means Preview's package-data folder is gone.
What Mole lists
| Location | Item | Default |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsTerminalPreview_8wekyb3d8bbwe |
Package data, removed with the app | Goes with the app row |
The Preview package and its data were removed; stable Windows Terminal stayed installed. The Terminal Preview startup task disappeared. The package firewall rule was reported and kept.
These defaults assume Remove data and settings with apps is off. Explicit Select all or Also remove user data can include the listed personal-data rows. Check the selection before confirming. Selected files that Mole removes go to the Recycle Bin; selected registry entries are backed up before removal. The vendor uninstaller has its own deletion behavior.
What this test covered
