How to uninstall uTools on Windows
uTools keeps its own settings, installed plugins and login state in one profile folder on this PC, separate from the program files. It also adds itself to sign-in startup by default. This guide covers uTools installed per-user from the Yuanli.uTools winget package.
Quit uTools first
Quit uTools from its tray icon or window; it stays running in the background by default while signed in or with plugins active. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any uTools.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find uTools, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Yuanli.uTools
If uTools still starts at sign-in
uTools adds a sign-in entry, org.yuanli.utools, under Settings › Apps › Startup. Its own uninstaller does not always remove this on its own; if it is still there afterward, turn it off yourself in Settings › Apps › Startup.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\uTools |
Login state, settings and plugin data, and rebuildable caches inside it | Keep it if you might reinstall; remove for a clean start |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\uTools-updater |
Downloaded update installers | Safe to remove |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process uTools -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Yuanli.uTools
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\utools"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\uTools"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\uTools"returningTruemeans your login state, settings and plugin data are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same NSIS uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\uTools on its own.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not cancel a paid uTools plan or sign you out of your account on other devices. Check your subscription in uTools' own account settings separately.
What Mole lists
For uTools installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder and the Start Menu shortcut are selected by default.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\uTools-updater, which holds only downloaded installers, is selected by default.%APPDATA%\uToolsis listed but not selected, since it holds your login state and plugin data. The caches inside it (Cache,Code Cache) are listed on their own and selected by default.- If a
utools://link registration still points at the removed program, Mole lists it too, selected by default, after backing it up to a.regfile. - A sign-in startup entry that still points at the removed program is listed and selected by default, backed up to a
.regfile first.
What this test covered
Tested with uTools 7.8.0 installed through winget, per-user scope, opened to its main window with the search bar and plugin page, without signing in. Not verified: a signed-in account and paid plugins.
