How to uninstall Upscayl on Windows
Upscayl saves each upscaled image to the output folder you pick, and those images stay where they are when you remove the app. If you added your own models, they live in the folder you pointed Upscayl at, which it does not remove either. Its settings are the only thing in its own data folder. This guide covers Upscayl installed machine-wide, for all users, from the Upscayl.Upscayl winget package.
Quit Upscayl first
Let any running upscale finish, then close the Upscayl window. It runs as several Upscayl.exe processes, so check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any still listed before you uninstall. The test found no startup entry.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Upscayl, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Upscayl.Upscayl
Because this install lives in Program Files for all users, removing it asks for administrator access.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%ProgramFiles%\Upscayl |
Program files | The uninstaller removes it |
%APPDATA%\Upscayl |
Your settings, with caches and logs inside | Keep it if you might reinstall and want the same settings; safe to remove for a clean start |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Upscayl-updater |
Downloaded update installers | Safe to remove |
| Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts for all users | Shortcuts to the app | Remove |
| Your output folders and any custom models folder | Upscaled images and models you added | Keep; they are yours, not the app's |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Upscayl -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Upscayl.Upscayl
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\Upscayl"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Upscayl"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Upscayl-updater"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a window or helper is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Upscayl"returningTruemeans your settings are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Upscayl-updater"returningTruemeans downloaded update installers are still on disk and can be removed.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Upscayl or %LOCALAPPDATA%\Upscayl-updater on its own.
What Mole lists
For Upscayl installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder goes with the app row.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Upscayl-updater, which holds only downloaded update installers, is selected by default.%APPDATA%\Upscaylis listed but not selected, since it holds your settings. The rebuildable caches inside it,Cache,Code Cache,DawnCache,GPUCacheandlogs, are separate rows selected by default.- The Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts for all users are selected by default.
- A row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program is selected by default.
- Output folders and custom model folders are never listed, since they live where you chose.
What this test covered
Tested on September 29, 2026 with Upscayl 2.15.0 installed through winget, machine-wide scope. The uninstaller is NSIS and ran silently. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. No image was upscaled and no custom model was added, so output folders and custom models were not part of the test.
