How to uninstall Typora on Windows
Your Markdown documents are ordinary files in the folders you saved them to, and removing Typora never touches them. What is worth saving first is smaller: any custom theme you added, and your license activation if you plan to move it to another device. This guide covers Typora installed per-machine from the appmakes.Typora winget package.
Quit Typora first
Save any open document and quit Typora, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Typora.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Typora, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id appmakes.Typora
Back up your themes first
Open Typora, go to File › Preferences, and click Open Theme Folder. Copy any theme or CSS file you added or changed to a folder of your own before you clear the app's data folder. To free a license slot for another device, use Typora's own My License option inside the app; a license covers a limited number of devices at a time. Typora's license help
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\Typora |
Settings, your custom themes and the editor's own caches | Copy your themes out first, then safe to remove |
HKCU\Software\Typora |
Your license activation on this device | Removing it clears the activation here; deactivate from within Typora first if you plan to reuse the license |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Typora -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id appmakes.Typora
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\Typora"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Typora"
Get-ItemProperty "HKCU:\Software\Typora" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a window is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\Typora"returningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there.Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Typora"returningTruemeans your settings and themes are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.Get-ItemPropertyreturning values means the entry remains. With no output, check for permission or other query errors before deciding that it is absent.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same InnoSetup uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Typora or your license activation on its own.
What Mole lists
For Typora installed per-machine from winget:
- The program folder and the Start Menu folder are selected by default; in this test the uninstaller had already removed both before Mole's own step ran.
%APPDATA%\Typorais listed but not selected, since it holds your settings and themes. The Cache, Code Cache, DawnGraphiteCache, DawnWebGPUCache and GPUCache folders inside it are separate rows, selected by default.HKCU\Software\Typorais listed but not selected.- File type registrations for
.md,.markdownand similar extensions are left alone, since other apps that open Markdown files share them.
What this test covered
Tested with Typora 1.14.9 installed through winget, per-machine scope, using its InnoSetup uninstaller (unins000.exe /SILENT). Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: a custom theme, a signed-in license, or the 1.14.10 update winget offered.
