How to uninstall Typeless on Windows
Typeless is an AI voice dictation app. On Windows it keeps its local database typeless.db, a Recordings folder, transcription history state and its settings in %APPDATA%\Typeless.exe, a folder named after the program file rather than the app. Removing the app leaves that folder, so copy it somewhere else first if you want your dictation history or recordings back after reinstalling. This guide covers Typeless installed per-user from the SimplyCA.Typeless winget package.
Quit Typeless first
Typeless starts at sign-in and keeps running in the background, nine Typeless.exe processes in this test. Quit it from its tray icon, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) that no Typeless.exe is still listed. Its startup entry is named Typeless.exe; you can turn it off in Settings › Apps › Startup, and the next steps cover removing it.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Typeless, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id SimplyCA.Typeless
The uninstaller removes the program folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Typeless and the Start Menu and desktop shortcuts. In this test it left %APPDATA%\Typeless.exe, %APPDATA%\Typeless, the downloaded update in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Typeless-updater, the typeless:// link and the startup entry, which then pointed at a program that no longer existed.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\Typeless.exe |
Settings, the local database typeless.db, Recordings, transcription history state, caches and logs |
Copy it elsewhere if you want your history or recordings; remove it for a clean start |
%APPDATA%\Typeless |
A small cache folder | Safe to remove |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Typeless-updater |
A downloaded update installer | Safe to remove |
HKCU\Software\Classes\typeless |
The typeless:// link registration |
Safe to remove once the app is gone |
The Typeless.exe value in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run |
The startup entry | Remove it once the app is gone |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Typeless -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id SimplyCA.Typeless
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Typeless"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Typeless.exe", "$env:APPDATA\Typeless", "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Typeless-updater"
Test-Path HKCU:\Software\Classes\typeless
Get-ItemProperty HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run -Name Typeless.exe -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means it is still open in the background. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. - The second command prints one
TrueorFalseper folder, in the order listed.Truefor%APPDATA%\Typeless.exemeans your history and settings are still there, which is expected if you chose to keep them. - The third
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the link registration is gone;Truemeans it is still there. Get-ItemPropertyreturning values means the entry remains. With no output, check for permission or other query errors before deciding that it is absent.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch the data folders, the update cache, the link or the startup entry.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not cancel a paid Typeless plan or delete your account. Manage the subscription from Typeless' own account settings.
What Mole lists
For Typeless installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder goes with the app row. The Start Menu and desktop shortcuts are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\Typeless.exeand%APPDATA%\Typelessare listed but not selected, since the first holds your settings, history and recordings. The caches inside them (Cache,Code Cache,Crashpadandlogs) are listed on their own and selected by default.%LOCALAPPDATA%\Typeless-updater, which holds only a downloaded installer, is selected by default.- The
typeless://link and theTypeless.exestartup entry are selected by default and backed up to a.regfile before removal. - A row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program is selected by default.
What this test covered
Tested on September 30, 2026 with Typeless 2.8.0, the x64 per-user installer from the winget package, run under emulation on an ARM64 virtual machine. The uninstaller is NSIS and Mole ran it silently. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: signing in, dictating with a real microphone, and whether history synced to the account survives a reinstall.
