How to uninstall TreeSize Free on Windows
TreeSize Free only reads your drives, so removing it touches none of your files. The one thing worth keeping is its settings, if you changed them and might reinstall; its uninstaller asks whether to delete them. This guide covers TreeSize Free installed per-user from the JAMSoftware.TreeSize.Free winget package, which puts it in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\JAM Software\TreeSize Free.
Quit TreeSize Free first
Close the TreeSize Free window, including any window you opened with the "TreeSize Free (Administrator)" shortcut, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any TreeSizeFree.exe still listed. It adds no startup entry.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find TreeSize Free, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id JAMSoftware.TreeSize.Free
The uninstaller asks "Would you like your application settings to be deleted too?". Choose Yes to remove them with the app, or No to keep them for a later install. The rest of this guide follows the No answer, which the test took. The uninstaller also removes the Explorer context menu package it installed.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\JAM Software\TreeSize Free |
Program files | The uninstaller removes it |
%APPDATA%\JAM Software\TreeSize Free |
Settings | Kept when you answer No; remove it if you do not plan to reinstall |
HKCU\Software\JAM Software\TreeSize Free |
Settings, including the context menu option | Kept when you answer No; remove it if you do not plan to reinstall |
%APPDATA%\JAM Software and HKCU\Software\JAM Software |
Parent folder and key | Empty once the two items above are gone; remove them yourself if nothing else from JAM Software is installed |
HKCU\Software\Classes\AppUserModelId\Embarcadero.DesktopToasts.TreeSizeFree |
The app's registration for Windows notifications | Harmless; remove it if you want a completely clean registry |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process TreeSizeFree -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id JAMSoftware.TreeSize.Free
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\JAM Software\TreeSize Free"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\JAM Software\TreeSize Free"
Test-Path "HKCU:\Software\JAM Software\TreeSize Free"
Get-AppxPackage *TreeSize*
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone. - The second and third
Test-PathreturningTruemean your settings are still there, which is expected if you answered No. - If
Get-AppxPackagesucceeds without suppressed errors, no output means the context menu package is gone.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses, with the same settings question; it does not remove anything you chose to keep.
What Mole lists
For TreeSize Free installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder goes with the app row, together with a row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program, selected by default.
- The Start Menu
TreeSize Freefolder is selected by default. %APPDATA%\JAM Software\TreeSize FreeandHKCU\Software\JAM Software\TreeSize Freeare listed but not selected, since they hold your settings. The key is backed up to a.regfile before removal.- The empty
JAM Softwareparent folder and key are not listed; check them and remove them yourself after the uninstall.
What this test covered
Tested on 2026-09-28 with TreeSize Free 4.8.1.610 installed through winget, per-user scope, the x64 Inno Setup package on an ARM64 virtual machine. The test installed it from an elevated session, so its uninstaller first showed an error and then asked for administrator access; a normal per-user install does not. The settings question was answered No, and every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: the Administrator shortcut and a scan with changed settings.
