How to uninstall TortoiseSVN on Windows
Removing TortoiseSVN does not touch your working copies; they are ordinary folders wherever you checked them out. The Subversion client settings it shares with other svn tools live separately and survive the uninstall too. This guide covers TortoiseSVN installed machine-wide from the TortoiseSVN.TortoiseSVN winget package.
Quit TortoiseSVN first
Close any TortoiseSVN dialog (commit, log, repository browser) and check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for TortoiseProc.exe before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find TortoiseSVN, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id TortoiseSVN.TortoiseSVN
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
HKCU\SOFTWARE\TortoiseSVN |
A handful of TortoiseSVN's own preference values (diff view, update reminders) | Safe to remove if you clear it yourself; the uninstaller does not touch it |
%APPDATA%\Subversion |
The Subversion client's own config, credentials cache and server certificate exceptions, shared by any svn client on the machine, including TortoiseSVN | Keep it if you use another svn client or plan to reinstall; back it up if it holds saved credentials you want to keep |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process TortoiseProc -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id TortoiseSVN.TortoiseSVN
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\TortoiseSVN"
Get-ItemProperty HKCU:\SOFTWARE\TortoiseSVN -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Subversion"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\TortoiseSVN"returningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there.Get-ItemPropertyreturning values means the entry remains. With no output, check for permission or other query errors before deciding that it is absent.Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Subversion"returningTruemeans the shared Subversion config is still there, which is expected unless you or another svn client removed it.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same MSI uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Subversion or any working copy.
What Mole lists
For TortoiseSVN installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder and the public Start Menu folder (Help, Settings, TortoiseIDiff, TortoiseMerge and the other shortcuts inside it) are selected by default.
HKCU\SOFTWARE\TortoiseSVNis listed, for review, not selected by default; in this test ticking it and removing it kept the key itself, since part of it is owned by Windows, but cleared the five preference values inside, after backing them up to a.regfile first.%APPDATA%\Subversionis not part of this list, since it is the Subversion client's own shared configuration, not something TortoiseSVN alone owns.
What this test covered
Tested with TortoiseSVN 1.14.9.29743 installed through the arm64 MSI, machine scope, elevated. No repository was checked out and no credentials were saved during the test.
