How to uninstall TortoiseHg on Windows
Keep Mercurial repositories, uncommitted changes and TortoiseHg settings before uninstalling.
This guide covers TortoiseHg 7.0.1 installed per machine with winget (WiX, x64). The program folder is %ProgramFiles%\TortoiseHg. After install, TortoiseHg Overlay Icon Server runs and draws icon overlays in File Explorer.
Quit the overlay server first
End TortoiseHgOverlayServer.exe in Task Manager, or let the uninstaller close it. This test saw one process. The startup item TortoiseHg Overlay Icon Server is a machine Run value. Toggling it raises a User Account Control prompt for Registry Console Tool. This test clicked No and did not allow it. The switch was still on before uninstall.
The Start menu also has a TortoiseHg Web Site shortcut, which opens a browser. That is not the program.
Remove it with its own uninstaller
A per-machine install needs an administrator to uninstall. Use the product code from this PC's uninstall entry. This test used:
msiexec /x {E0CAD29A-A998-4CCE-B36A-3A8963CD34AB}
You can also uninstall TortoiseHg 7.0.1 (x64) from Settings, Apps, Installed apps.
Where the data is
After this uninstall the program folder was gone. The public data folder, the Roaming folder and the Start menu folder were listed and were already gone. The startup item was gone too.
HKCU\Software\TortoiseHg was still there, with only the value ContextMenuVersion. The removal receipt said Removed, reason keptShared.
Check the result
Get-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E0CAD29A-A998-4CCE-B36A-3A8963CD34AB}" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\TortoiseHg"
Get-ItemProperty "HKCU:\Software\TortoiseHg" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object ContextMenuVersion
- No output from that query does not prove the entry is absent when errors are suppressed. Confirm a successful query or an explicit missing-target result; a listed entry means it remains.
Falsefrom the second means the program folder is gone.- ContextMenuVersion on the third means that user key is still there.
What Mole lists
| Location | Item | Default |
|---|---|---|
%ProgramFiles%\TortoiseHg |
Program files | Goes with the app row |
%ProgramData%\TortoiseHg |
Settings or app data; review before removal | Listed but not selected |
%APPDATA%\TortoiseHg |
Settings or app data; review before removal | Listed but not selected |
%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\TortoiseHg |
Shortcut | Selected by default |
HKCU\SOFTWARE\TortoiseHg |
Registry entry | Listed but not selected |
The program, selected ProgramData and Roaming folders were removed or already absent, and the overlay startup entry disappeared. HKCU\Software\TortoiseHg still contained ContextMenuVersion after the run; the completion result did not mean the entire key disappeared.
These defaults assume Remove data and settings with apps is off. Explicit Select all or Also remove user data can include the listed personal-data rows. Check the selection before confirming. Selected files that Mole removes go to the Recycle Bin; selected registry entries are backed up before removal. The vendor uninstaller has its own deletion behavior.
What this test covered
Recorded on 2026-10-19: TortoiseHg, version 7.0.1, machine-wide, MSI, winget package TortoiseHg.TortoiseHg. The evidence comes from an ARM64 Windows test environment and a development build of Mole. It does not certify the current downloadable package or removal of real signed-in accounts, synchronized data or production projects.
Vendor documentation. The paths and removal results above are observations from the Windows test unless explicitly attributed to the vendor.
