How to uninstall Sublime Text 4 on Windows
Back up %APPDATA%\Sublime Text before removing Sublime Text: it is where your own settings, key bindings, snippets and installed package configuration live, and it does not go away when you uninstall the app. This guide covers Sublime Text 4 installed machine-wide from the SublimeHQ.SublimeText.4 winget package.
Quit Sublime Text first
Save open files and close every Sublime Text window. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any sublime_text.exe or plugin_host process still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Sublime Text, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id SublimeHQ.SublimeText.4
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\Sublime Text |
Your settings, key bindings, snippets and installed package configuration | Back this up first; the uninstaller does not remove it |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Sublime Text |
Editor caches | Safe to remove |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Sublime Text\Cache |
Regenerable cache inside the folder above | Safe to remove |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process sublime_text -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id SublimeHQ.SublimeText.4
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\Sublime Text"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Sublime Text"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a window is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Sublime Text"returningTruemeans your settings and packages are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Inno Setup uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Sublime Text or %LOCALAPPDATA%\Sublime Text on its own.
What Mole lists
For Sublime Text 4 installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder and the public Start Menu shortcut are selected by default.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Sublime Textis listed but not selected; theCachefolder inside it is a separate row and is selected by default.%APPDATA%\Sublime Text, where your settings and packages live, is listed but not selected.- The
.sublime-build,.sublime-projectand other.sublime-*file type registrations are left alone, since several editors and tools can share them.
What this test covered
Tested with Sublime Text 4, build 4215, installed through winget, machine-wide scope. Every row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: a purchased license file, an install that had Sublime Text 3 data alongside it.
