How to uninstall Steam China on Windows
The winget package for Steam China installs only a small bootstrapper; the full client, and any games, download the first time you launch it. If you have already used Steam China and installed games, check each game's own save location and Steam Cloud sync before uninstalling: this guide only covers the client itself, not a game library. This guide covers Steam China installed machine-wide from the PerfectWorld.SteamChina winget package.
Quit Steam China first
Steam China's bootstrapper starts at sign-in and sits in the system tray. Right-click its tray icon and choose to exit, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Steam* process still listed, including steam.exe or steamwebhelper.exe if the full client had downloaded.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find 蒸汽平台 (Steam China), and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id PerfectWorld.SteamChina
Where the data lives
Steam clients, including Steam China, normally keep installed games in a steamapps folder and per-account data in a userdata folder, both inside the client's own install directory. This test only checked the small bootstrapper before any game was downloaded, so back up saves following each game's own instructions rather than relying on this guide for exact paths.
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Program Files (x86)\SteamChina (or wherever you installed it) |
The client itself, plus games and account data if you installed any | Back up any games or saves you want to keep before uninstalling |
Common Files\Steam\steamservice.exe |
A background client service, shared with international Steam if it is also installed | Leave alone; removing Steam China does not remove it |
| Microsoft GameInput (a separate installed program) | A controller-input runtime Steam installs | Leave it installed; other games may use it too |
HKCU\Software\Valve\Steam |
Holds one shared value (SteamInstaller), also used by international Steam |
Leave alone if you also use international Steam |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process -Name "Steam*" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id PerfectWorld.SteamChina
Test-Path "${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}\SteamChina"
Get-ItemProperty HKCU:\Software\Valve\Steam -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means the bootstrapper or the full client is still running. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the install folder, including any games installed inside it, is gone;Truemeans files remain there, which is expected if you kept games or data on purpose.Get-ItemPropertyreturning values means the entry remains. With no output, check for permission or other query errors before deciding that it is absent.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the vendor's silent NSIS uninstaller (/S) and removes the same program files Settings › Apps removes; it does not touch a steamapps or userdata folder inside the install directory.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not close your Steam China account or remove your purchases. Cloud saves stay with your account regardless of whether the client is installed.
What Mole lists
For Steam China installed machine-wide from winget:
- The Start Menu folder and the public Desktop shortcut are selected by default. In this test the uninstaller had already deleted both before Mole's review ran.
- The shared Steam client service under
Common Files\Steam, the separately installed Microsoft GameInput runtime and its service, and the sharedHKCU\Software\Valve\Steamkey are not offered, since Mole never removes something a still-installed program also uses. - This test's uninstall review never saw a
steamappsoruserdatafolder, because the winget install only puts down the bootstrapper; a full client with downloaded games would need its own separate test.
What this test covered
Tested with Steam China (build 2.10.91.91) installed through winget, machine scope. The install only downloaded the small bootstrapper package; a full client with games installed was not part of this test, so removing an install with games or a signed-in account was not verified.
