How to uninstall Snagit 2026 on Windows
Back up your capture library and separately saved screenshots before removing Snagit, then verify that the copies open. Keep the license or account information you need for reinstalling. This guide covers Snagit 2026 installed machine-wide through winget, not Camtasia or other TechSmith products.
Quit and uninstall Snagit
Close both the Capture window and Snagit Editor using their File › Exit commands, as TechSmith's uninstall instructions describe. Use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to check Task Manager for remaining Snagit processes. The test also found a Snagit machine-wide startup entry, which disappeared after uninstalling.
Open Settings › Apps › Installed apps, select Snagit and choose Uninstall; Windows 10 uses Apps & features. The tested installer asked whether to keep customizations, and the recorded choice was Keep Customizations. This choice does not protect a folder you subsequently select for removal in Mole.
For the winget package:
winget uninstall --id TechSmith.Snagit.2026 --exact
winget runs the vendor's uninstaller. It does not replace backing up captures, and uninstalling does not cancel a TechSmith subscription.
Locations observed in testing
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%ProgramFiles%\TechSmith\Snagit |
The tested installation | Run the uninstaller first; only review surviving files afterward |
%ProgramData%\TechSmith\Snagit |
Snagit's machine-wide data | Back up wanted settings before removing this leaf |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\TechSmith\Snagit |
Snagit's local data | Inspect and back up wanted content; do not assume the whole folder is cache |
%APPDATA%\Techsmith\Snagit |
Snagit's roaming data, empty in this run | Keep if reinstalling or back up before removal |
HKCU\Software\TechSmith\SnagIt |
Snagit settings | Retain if wanted; export the exact key before manual changes |
%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\TechSmith |
In this test, shortcuts pointing to Snagit | Only remove surviving Snagit shortcuts; keep any belonging to another product |
%APPDATA%\Techsmith\features.json |
A configuration file under the vendor folder | Keep; this test did not establish that Snagit alone owns it |
These are measured locations, not a complete list of capture storage. Find your actual library in Snagit before uninstalling. The test retained the empty %ProgramData%\TechSmith folder, %LOCALAPPDATA%\TechSmith\Logs folder and HKCU\Software\TechSmith key; leave vendor parents alone. Edge WebView2 was installed alongside Snagit and was not separately removed.
Check the result
winget list --id TechSmith.Snagit.2026 --exact
Test-Path -LiteralPath "$env:ProgramFiles\TechSmith\Snagit" -ErrorAction Stop
Test-Path -LiteralPath "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\TechSmith\Snagit" -ErrorAction Stop
Test-Path -LiteralPath 'HKCU:\Software\TechSmith\SnagIt' -ErrorAction Stop
A winget row means the package is still listed. Empty output or a source error alone does not prove removal; also check Installed apps. For each Test-Path, True means that specific folder or key exists, while False without an error means it does not. An access error leaves the result unknown. None of these commands checks your capture backups.
What Mole lists
With Remove data and settings with apps off, the test's rows are:
- The install folder, selected with the Application row.
%ProgramData%\TechSmith\Snagit,%LOCALAPPDATA%\TechSmith\Snagitand%APPDATA%\Techsmith\Snagit, each listed but not selected.- The TechSmith Start Menu shortcut folder containing only Snagit shortcuts in this run, selected by default.
HKCU\Software\TechSmith\SnagIt, listed but not selected.- Usage records for the Snagit program path, selected by default, separate from the program folder itself.
Select all and Also remove data include the listed data rows. If the data-default preference is enabled, eligible app-owned AppData rows may start selected; ProgramData and registry keys do not. Files Mole removes go to the Recycle Bin, and registry keys are exported to a .reg backup before removal.
All listed rows were selected in the test. Mole removed the installation and the three Snagit data folders; the shortcut folder, settings key and usage records were already absent when checked. It did not list the shared TechSmith parents or features.json.
What this test covered
Snagit 26.4.0 was installed through winget and uninstalled on October 21, 2026, in a Windows 11 ARM64 VM using a development build of Mole. The install was machine-wide and used Windows Installer. Keep Customizations was chosen before Mole processed the selected leftovers. A populated capture library, license activation, updates and the downloadable Mole package were not verified.
