How to uninstall Slack on Windows
Save anything you downloaded to this PC only, and check that recent messages are visible from a browser at your usual workspace before removing the app. This guide covers Slack installed as a Windows app package (MSIX) through winget or the Microsoft Store, per-user scope. It does not cover a Slack workspace a browser or another device keeps open.
Quit Slack first
Leave any calls, then quit Slack from its tray icon or window menu. The packaged app runs as several processes at once, so check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any remaining Slack entries before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Slack, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id SlackTechnologies.Slack
Because Slack ships as a Windows app package, this uses Windows' own package removal rather than a separate uninstaller program.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\com.tinyspeck.slackdesktop_8yrtsj140pw4g |
Settings, sign-in state and local cache, kept together in one folder | Removed with the app; back it up first if you want to keep local settings |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Slack -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-AppxPackage -Name SlackTechnologies.Slack
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\com.tinyspeck.slackdesktop_8yrtsj140pw4g"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a window is still open. Get-AppxPackagereturning no match, after confirming the query succeeded without suppressed errors, means the package record is gone; a returned object means the uninstall did not finish.Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the data folder is gone;Truemeans it is still there, which is fine if you kept it on purpose.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same package removal Settings › Apps uses; it does not keep a separate copy of your data anywhere else.
Account and workspace
Uninstalling does not remove your workspace membership, sign you out of Slack on a phone or browser, or cancel a paid plan. If notifications continue after removal, check whether they come from a browser tab or another device still signed in; leaving a workspace or changing a plan is a separate action inside Slack itself.
What Mole lists
For Slack installed as a Windows app package, per-user scope:
- The app row removes the package and its data folder under
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\...together; for a packaged app, settings, sign-in state and cache all live in that one folder. - Slack's startup task belongs to the package and goes with it.
What this test covered
Tested with Slack 4.52.162 installed through winget as a Windows app package (MSIX), per-user scope. Not verified: launching the app through the Start menu (the test tooling for that came later and was not used on this run), the Microsoft Store install path directly, or a non-packaged Slack installer.
