How to uninstall ShareX on Windows
ShareX keeps the screenshots and recordings you took wherever your output folder is set, and removing the app never touches them. This guide covers ShareX installed per-machine from the ShareX.ShareX winget package.
Quit ShareX first
ShareX runs from a tray icon and often starts at sign-in; quit it from the tray, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any ShareX.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find ShareX, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id ShareX.ShareX
Where the data lives
Your captured images and recordings live wherever you set ShareX's output folder in its own settings; check that folder before you uninstall if you want to keep them, since this guide does not touch it.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process ShareX -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id ShareX.ShareX
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\ShareX"
Get-Item "$env:APPDATA\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ShareX.lnk" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means it is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there.Get-Itemon the startup shortcut returning no match, after confirming the query succeeded without suppressed errors, means this startup shortcut is absent; printing the file means the shortcut is still there.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same InnoSetup uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it never touches your captured images or recordings.
What Mole lists
For ShareX installed per-machine from winget:
- The program folder, the Start Menu folder and the sign-in startup shortcut are selected by default.
- A
ShareX.sxcuand aShareX.sxiefile type registration, and the right-click menu entries ShareX adds for files and folders, are selected by default. - If ShareX registered a native messaging host for Chrome or Firefox, the host's registry key is selected by default and backed up to a
.regfile first; in this test the uninstaller had already removed both before Mole's own step ran, and the empty Firefox native messaging container that was left behind is a shared key other apps can also register under, so Mole leaves it alone.
What this test covered
Tested with ShareX 21.0.0 installed through winget, machine scope, using its InnoSetup uninstaller (unins000.exe /SILENT). Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: a Chrome or Firefox browser extension that talks to ShareX's native messaging host.
