How to uninstall ScreenToGif on Windows
ScreenToGif keeps almost no data of its own: its settings file is small and there is no project library to plan a backup around. Exported GIFs and videos go wherever you saved them and are not touched by any of this. This guide covers ScreenToGif installed machine-wide from the NickeManarin.ScreenToGif winget package.
Quit ScreenToGif first
Close any open recorder, editor or board window. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for ScreenToGif.exe before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find ScreenToGif, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\ScreenToGif |
Its settings file | Safe to remove |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process ScreenToGif -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\ScreenToGif"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\ScreenToGif"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. In this test the uninstaller removed it on its own. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\ScreenToGif"returningTruemeans the settings file is still there, which is expected unless you removed it yourself.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Windows Installer uninstall Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; in this test it also cleared %APPDATA%\ScreenToGif on its own, though that is not guaranteed for every version.
What Mole lists
For ScreenToGif installed machine-wide from winget:
- The Desktop shortcut and the user Start Menu shortcut are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\ScreenToGifis listed but not selected.- The program folder under
Program Files\ScreenToGifis not currently listed as its own row. In this test the vendor's uninstaller removed the whole folder on its own, so nothing was left to clean up by hand afterward.
What this test covered
Tested with ScreenToGif 2.43.2 installed through winget, machine scope, arm64 Windows Installer package. Not verified: exported GIF or video files, or a custom output folder.
