How to uninstall Notion on Windows
Open notion.so in a browser and check that your recent page edits are there before removing the desktop app; offline changes that have not synced yet are not recovered by uninstalling. This guide covers Notion installed per-user from the Notion.Notion winget package. Notion Desktop
Quit Notion first
Confirm your edits show up on the web, then quit Notion from its tray icon or window menu. It runs as several helper processes at once, like other Electron apps, so check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for anything still listed as Notion before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Notion, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Notion.Notion
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Notion |
Program files | Removed by the uninstaller |
%APPDATA%\Notion |
Sign-in, settings and local cache | Keep if you may reinstall; remove to start fresh |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\notion-updater |
Downloaded update installers | Safe to remove |
| Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts | Shortcuts to the app | Remove |
If Notion still starts at sign-in
A plain uninstall does not always remove the login entry Notion added. Open Settings › Apps › Startup and turn off any Notion entry you still see there. In this test the uninstaller left a stale electron.app.Notion entry behind after removal; a later Mole uninstall review on the same install listed and removed it, with a .reg backup saved first.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Notion -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Notion.Notion
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Notion"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Notion"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means it is still running. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Notion"returningTruemeans local cache and app data are still there, which is expected unless you removed it yourself.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same NSIS uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\Notion on its own.
Account and sync
Uninstalling does not cancel a paid Notion plan or delete your workspace. A workspace you can still open on the web belongs to the account, whether or not the desktop app is installed.
What Mole lists
For Notion installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Notionand the Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts are selected by default. %APPDATA%\Notionis listed but not selected, since it holds your sign-in and settings. Its caches are listed on their own and selected.%LOCALAPPDATA%\notion-updater, which only holds downloaded installers, is selected by default.- The
electron.app.Notionsign-in entry and thenotion://link the uninstaller leaves pointing at the removed program are selected by default, each backed up to a.regfile before removal.
What this test covered
Tested with Notion 7.35.1 installed through winget, per-user scope, uninstaller NSIS with a silent command Mole reused. Several passes on the same install added the stale startup entry, the protocol link and the two Chrome messaging-host manifests to what the review lists. Not verified: a signed-in workspace, or unsynced offline edits.
