How to uninstall MuseScore Studio on Windows
MuseScore Studio keeps its app data in %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4, separate from the scores you save, and that folder also holds local copies of scores from your MuseScore.com account, workspaces and extensions. Back it up before you remove it, and keep your own score files wherever you saved them. This guide covers MuseScore Studio installed machine-wide from the Musescore.Musescore winget package, which uses a Windows Installer package.
Quit MuseScore Studio first
Save your open scores and close MuseScore Studio. It runs a crash reporter next to the main program; check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any MuseScore4.exe or crashpad_handler.exe still listed. It added no startup entry in this test.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find MuseScore Studio, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Musescore.Musescore
This is a machine-wide install, so Windows asks for administrator access. The uninstaller removes the program folder, the shortcuts and MuseScore's file type registrations.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%ProgramFiles%\MuseScore 4 |
Program files | Removed by the uninstaller |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4 |
Local copies of cloud scores, extensions, workspaces, session, languages | Back it up first; remove it only for a clean start |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4\cache and logs |
Cache and logs | Safe to remove |
%APPDATA%\MuseScore |
MuseScore4.ini, the app's settings file |
Keep it if you will reinstall |
HKCU\Software\QtProject\OrganizationDefaults |
An empty key shared by programs built with Qt | Not MuseScore's own; leave it |
MuseScore's handbook explains how to set the folders for scores, templates and plugins from inside the app on its Preferences page.
Check the result
Get-Process MuseScore4 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Musescore.Musescore
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\MuseScore 4"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\MuseScore\MuseScore4"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\MuseScore"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone. Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\MuseScore 4"returningFalsemeans the program folder is gone.Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\MuseScore\MuseScore4"returningTruemeans your app data, including the local copies of cloud scores, is still there, which is expected unless you removed it yourself.Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\MuseScore"returningTruemeans the settings file is still there.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Windows Installer uninstall that Settings › Apps uses; it does not touch either MuseScore data folder.
Account
Uninstalling does not sign you out of MuseScore.com or cancel a MuseScore PRO subscription, and scores you uploaded stay online.
What Mole lists
For MuseScore Studio installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder, the desktop and Start Menu shortcuts, a row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program, and MuseScore's file type registrations and Open with entry are selected by default; registrations are backed up to a
.regfile before removal. %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4\cacheandlogsare selected by default.%APPDATA%\MuseScoreis listed but not selected, since it holds your settings.%LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4itself is not listed, because it holds local copies of your scores.- The shared Qt key is not listed.
What this test covered
Tested on September 27, 2026 with MuseScore Studio 4.7.5 installed through winget, machine scope, removed with its Windows Installer package. The recorded run listed the program folder, shortcuts, file type registrations, Open with entry and usage records, and every one was ticked and removed; the cache, logs and settings rows were added after that run and have not been run again on the test machine. Not verified: saved scores, a signed-in MuseScore.com account, or Muse Sounds.
