How to uninstall mRemoteNG on Windows
mRemoteNG keeps your saved connections, folders and credentials in a per-user data folder that its uninstaller does not touch. Back it up first if you want to keep them. This guide covers mRemoteNG installed machine-wide from the mRemoteNG.mRemoteNG winget package.
Quit mRemoteNG first
Close every mRemoteNG window and any open remote session. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for mRemoteNG.exe before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find mRemoteNG, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id mRemoteNG.mRemoteNG
Back up your connections first
Your saved connections, folders and any credentials you stored live in %APPDATA%\mRemoteNG. Copy that folder before you uninstall if you want to reopen the same connection list later.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\mRemoteNG |
Your saved connections, folders and stored credentials | Back this up first; the uninstaller does not remove it |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\mRemoteNG |
A small per-user settings folder | Safe to remove |
HKCU\SOFTWARE\mRemoteNG |
A few application settings | Safe to remove |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process mRemoteNG -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id mRemoteNG.mRemoteNG
Test-Path "${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}\mRemoteNG"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\mRemoteNG"
Get-ItemProperty HKCU:\SOFTWARE\mRemoteNG -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. In this test the uninstaller removed it. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\mRemoteNG"returningTruemeans your saved connections are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.Get-ItemPropertyon the registry key prints something only if the key is still there; in this test the uninstaller removed it on its own.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Windows Installer uninstall Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\mRemoteNG on its own.
Account and credentials
mRemoteNG has no account of its own; any passwords you stored for a connection live only in %APPDATA%\mRemoteNG, encrypted with a master password if you set one. Removing the app does not affect the servers or devices you connected to.
What Mole lists
For mRemoteNG installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder, the public Desktop shortcut and the public Start Menu folder are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\mRemoteNG, where your saved connections live, is listed but not selected.%LOCALAPPDATA%\mRemoteNGis listed but not selected.HKCU\SOFTWARE\mRemoteNGis listed but not selected. In this test the vendor's uninstaller had already removed it.
A shared HKCU\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer key that appeared while mRemoteNG was running is Windows' own key, not this app's, and is left alone.
What this test covered
Tested with mRemoteNG 1.76.20.24615 installed through winget, machine scope, x64 Windows Installer package. No connections were saved or credentials stored during the test.
