How to uninstall Microsoft Copilot on Windows
Microsoft Copilot keeps very little of its own on this PC. When you sign in, your conversations are tied to your Microsoft account rather than stored locally, so check that the ones you need open on the Copilot website before you remove the app, and save any files you uploaded. Its local settings and cache sit in a Microsoft Store package data folder that Windows removes together with the app. This guide covers the Microsoft Copilot app installed per-user from the Microsoft Store (9NHT9RB2F4HD). It is not Microsoft 365 Copilot, which is a separate app with its own entry.
Quit Copilot first
Copilot runs as Copilot.exe, one process in this test. It also registers a startup entry named Copilot, which was off after the install; you can check it in Settings › Apps › Startup. Close the Copilot window, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Copilot.exe still listed.
Remove the app
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Copilot, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id 9NHT9RB2F4HD
A Store app removes itself for your account without an administrator prompt, and Windows deletes its data folder and startup entry along with it.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.Copilot_8wekyb3d8bbwe |
The app's local settings and cache | Windows removes it with the app |
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Copilot |
An empty key that stays after the uninstall | Empty and harmless; it sits among Microsoft's own keys, so leave it |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Copilot -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Copilot
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\Microsoft.Copilot_8wekyb3d8bbwe"
Test-Path HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Copilot
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - If
Get-AppxPackagesucceeds without suppressed errors, no output means the app is removed for your account; a listed package means it is still installed. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the app's data folder is gone. - The second
Test-PathreturningTruemeans the empty key is still there, which is expected and does nothing.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall removes the same Store package for your account, with the same result.
Account
Uninstalling does not delete your Microsoft account, its Copilot conversations, or a Copilot subscription. Manage those in your Microsoft account, and keep using Copilot in a browser if you like.
What Mole lists
For Copilot installed from the Microsoft Store:
- The app row takes the app's data folder in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packageswith it. - The empty
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Copilotkey is not listed.
What this test covered
Tested on September 29, 2026 with Microsoft Copilot 1.25121.84.0 installed from the Microsoft Store, per-user scope, on an ARM64 test VM. The app was opened without signing in. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: a signed-in account and its conversation history.
