How to uninstall Mailspring on Windows
This guide covers the official Mailspring 1.26.0 x64 Squirrel Windows installer. Exit Mailspring before uninstalling.
Back up settings and data first
After quitting Mailspring, copy %APPDATA%\Mailspring to another location if you want to keep its settings and local mail data. Check the copy before removing the original.
Uninstall the app
Uninstall Mailspring from Windows Settings. The measured user program folder was %LOCALAPPDATA%\Mailspring.
Check the result
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Mailspring"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Mailspring"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Foundry 376, LLC"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Mailspring.lnk"
Test-Path 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailspring'
Test-Path 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Classes\Mailspring.Url.mailto'
(Get-Item 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run' -ErrorAction Stop).GetValueNames() -contains 'com.squirrel.mailspring.mailspring'
The profile check returned True because its personal-data row stayed unchecked. The other checks returned False. A query error does not prove that a path or startup value is absent.
What Mole lists
The application, three shortcuts, two owned link-handler registrations, startup entry and usage records are selected by default. %APPDATA%\Mailspring is an unchecked personal-data Review row and remains unchecked by bulk selection.
What this test covered
Tested on October 6, 2026, in a Windows 11 ARM64 VM with a Mole development build. The eight selected targets produced six Removed and two Missing outcomes. The exact registration, seven unique selected paths and ordinary and SYSTEM process inventories independently showed no owned application. The startup switch was changed and restored before uninstalling, and its actual Run value was absent afterwards.
The retained profile accounted for 28 residue entries. The notification identity and default-mail-client registration were retained under the existing cleanup boundary. No mailbox was connected. Real mail, profile recovery and the released Mole package were not tested.
A separate vendor uninstall removed the registration and main executable but left the Squirrel updater, partial version tree, startup value and link-handler commands. The development probe did not list these owned remnants immediately or at least ten minutes later. This external-uninstall detection gap remains unresolved, and no remnant was removed by hand. The empty vendor Start Menu folder was retained.
